Khaosan Road was definitely an experience in itself! Hundreds of thai men shouting 'do you want to buy a wedding dress?' 'do you want a free husband?' and inviting us to the ping pong shows (if anyone doesn't know what they are - google it!). We got extremely excited when we saw our first ladyboy but we were also quite disturbed! We had our tea, a chicken stir fry cooked infront of us on a wok for about 2 pound.
When we returned to the hotel there was still no sign of the cases and we were told we could expect them by 10pm. 10pm came and went so we decided to head out with the others from the group with no make-up and no hair wash in the mindset of you only live once 'YOLO' - very bad idea...
Several buckets of 'very strong' cocktails later we were loving life in a Thai nightclub. In between bars, we had many interesting events including Jess eating a fried woodlouse and Lucy eating a whole fried frog (see photo). One of the girls in our group, Anna, decided it would be funny to steal a chicken kebab from a street seller who also happened to be a dwarf. This resulted in us all being chased down Khaosan Road by a dwarf. When she finally caught Anna, she whacked her with a huge chicken kebab and demanded she hand the money over - hilarious!
We returned to the hotel to check on the case situation, by this point we were considerably intoxicated! We asked the receptionist if they had arrived yet and when he said yes we hugged him very enthusiastically! It took Lucy at least 15 minutes to work out what her combination lock code was. Once we had finished hugging our cases, we headed back out to find the others. The rest is a little hazy... Apart from the McDonalds incident. Lucy decided to buy an XL coke and carried it to the table (almost!) but spilt it allllll over the floor which was, in her mind, the funniest thing that had ever happened. She then got a little cocky and went to jump over the puddle she had just created but instead slipped on the coke and fully hit the deck, covering herself in coca cola.
We awoke to a wake up call from the co-ordinator at 10am, the time we were supposed to meet. Ooops. We quickly dressed and headed down to meet everyone. Then we headed to the markets by boat where we saw a wild crocodile in the river. When we got to the markets, Lucy felt a little queezy (a mixture of the night before and the 40 degree heat) and decided she needed to sit down, NOW. So she sat in the middle of all the stalls and was rushed over to by a series of helpful Thai people whilst Jess photographed the event. Herbal remedies were shoved in her face as she was fanned and massaged by 2 ladies. The policeman joined the fun with his first aid kit consisting of all herbal remedies. Lucy was fine, just attention seeking and now we know how to get a free massage!
We visited some temples which were really beautiful. Especially the Temple of Dawn which we attempted to climb but failed. After the temples we had our first tuktuk ride which was very scary and definitely not safe but we made it back in one piece.
After a much needed nap we went out for tea with the rest of the group and did some more shopping. As we are on an alcohol free day, we went to get a manicure for 2 pounds and then went to McDonalds again. Lucy was laughed at by all staff who had obviously witnessed the previous night tumble.
We leave Bangkok tomorrow, which is probably a good idea and head to our next hostel (complete with swimming pool) in Kanchanaburi.
Mum, Dad.. We're fine, nothing to worry about - sounds worse than it is!
