We arrived in Singapore after an odd flight sat next to a witch look-alike. Being seasoned travellers we easily found our hostel shuttle. After lugging our cases up 4 flights of stairs (this has not got any easier!) we checked into our 26 bed dorm... yes 26! But at least we had free internetand breakfast to compensate. We got into bed to hear the worlds loudest snorer and a guy shouting in his sleep - ear plugs required!
After our 4 pieces of toast we decided to set off walking in any general direction with no map. Miraculously we were heading the direction of Sentosa island where the beach is so we carried on walking, and walking, and walking until 2 and a half hours later we were finally lay on the beach. We had a lovely day in the sun, with our own island for part of the day, while several Chinese/Indians took pictures of us - this continued along with shameless stares throughout our stay - strange! We also realised Chinese people will take photos with absolutely anything doing the standard peace sign in each photo. After a long day at the beach, the rain set in so we took the underground to the shops on Orchard Road hunting down Abercrombie (which we couldn't afford) and Topshop (which we could!). We went to an Asian food court for tea (even after Thailand)and Jess demolished a chicken katsu curry and Lucy had duck and rice with a very dodgy looking soup. That night we watched the Olypmpics and played dodge the chatty American researcher before bed.
The nest day we woke up early (lie-ins are impossible in a 26 bed dorm) and took the bus to the World Famous Zoo. We saw orangutans (our fave), lions, zebras, giraffes - pretty much any animal you can think of including naked mole rats! Our paparazzi of Chinese followed us again and were not discreet with taking photos with us in the background. We had a huge burger for tea and then we were ready for the night safari with literally thousands of other people. We boardedd the tram and set off around the safari park - the animals looked so close as there were no cages/fences, just a river which you can hardly see separting us from lions, bears and hyenas!
With very sore feet from the day before we opted for the underground to Sentosa for more sunshine - with yet another McDonalds for lunch. That night we went to Bugis Street markets to buy our last presents and navigated our way excellently back to the hostel for more Olympics and tp watch Andy Murray win gold and more impressively, crack a smile!
The next day we went to Universal Studios Singapore for a day of rollercaosters and shows - so much fun! The Chinese were in their element with all the characters to take photos with. We ordered Pizza Hut for tea, then went for a few last night cocktails at Clarke Quay and returned to watch Beth Tweddle take bronze - woo!
We spent our last day soaking up the sun on the beach with a picnic reminiscing on the past two months. We even took a break from sunbathing to walk to the southern most point of Asia. We had our last meal at a nice restaurant (nothing like all our other meals!). We tooka shuttle to the airport and disaster struck when we realised we had left our babies, our Abercrombie coats, at the hostel! We persuaded the driver to turn back for a small fee - phew!
And so that concludes our 9 weeks of travelling... We cannot even begin to sum up what an incredible time we have had and all the incredible people we have met. We have had so much fun but have also learnt so much including:
- Do not put foil in the microwave - it will set on fire.
- Never share a room with someone called Alan.
- Never drink more than one Thailand bucket to yourself.
- Never tell people you are from Manchester.
- Never drink snake bite.
- Always get a double room - not a dorm.
- Dress in fancy dress at any opportunity and always go all-out.
- Appreciate parents cooking- you cannot live on pasta.
- Take a nun habit and gown to Sangkhlaburi
- YOLO is not a good motto.
- Never sledge down a mountain - it will result in injury (chin injury!)
- You can never go wrong with a McDonalds.
- Bread and cheese are the way of life.
- Chinese people like to take pictures of anything and everything... especially white girls!
- Travelling with your best friend will be the best time of your life - make the most of every second.
We hope you have enjoyed reading about our travels, thank you for taking the time to read our blog.
For the last time...
