I went to watch Oracle Team USA today win New Zealand. I had very high hopes for them, I even got there early with a soda in my hand and after taking a few snaps of team loading onto the boat I grabbed a bean bag in front of the screen.
I have watched them from the bay a few times but as it is coming into the finals I didn't want to miss a thing. The weather wasn't great and the wind was up. You could tell the sailors were nervous. Half an hour later and New Zealand won the race, they said from the start that USA had the fastest and best built boat but New Zealand had the fittest sailors (you could definitely agree with that!) and were always training more. I think they were more used to the weather conditions.
I was very excited as both of the teams were having poster signings, I already bought a photograph of the USA team from the Embarcadero market, it was really cool and the sail boat was flying on water. So I got the USA team to sign it. One of the sailors said a very funny comment to me. He said don't let New Zealand see you standing here asking for our autographs, I just laughed it off and said well that would be strange as I am British, laughing along.
I went to the New Zealand signing but they didn't turn up, apparently they were out celebrating. But the celebrating didn't do them much good as they lost the next few races and Oracle Team USA won the America's Cup. I am now always keeping my eyes on my photograph as I am sure it could be worth something.
