Spent two nights in Franz Josef so that we could do a full day hike up the glacier.

The hike was amazing....we had to have all the special equipment on waterproof everything, hats gloves and special boots with crampons to wear when we got to the ice.

The first 30 minutes or so we were walking through rainforest and when we came out we were at the foot of a
Huge glacier. We hiked up it for about 4hours before making our way back down, squeezing through cracks in the ice and tunnels made by the melting of the glacier.

The guide told us that the Maori believe that the glacier was created when the gods froze the tears of a young girl who's boyfriend fell from the mountain.

Such a good day, one of my favourite things we have done in nz.
