We had a great night at Whispering Hills RV Park. We did not have to rush in the morning since Ark Encounter does not open today until noon.
After taking our time getting ready we headed out and drove back to Williamstown, KY. We stopped for lunch at a Mexican Restaurant right next to the park. Lunch was very good.
The Ark is pretty awesome. It is huge. The posts inside the Ark are massive. They did a really good job with it. They explain they build it based on the Bible plus historical information of ship building techniques of the time. The exhibits were very informative and well done. We enjoyed reading through the displays and admiring the workmanship that went into the Ark and the replicas of the animals. It was a lot of information. Towards the end we had information overload and were just skimming through the displays. They have a Fair Trade gift shop full of handcrafted quality items. I could have bought a few things but contained myself.
There is a zoo with a few animals - Kangaroo, Yak, Zebra, Llama, Emu, Alpacas, Camels and donkeys.
After we were done we decided to drive further south to get closer to the sites tomorrow. We drove about two hours to Bardstown and planned to spend the night at Wal-Mart. When we arrived we found signs indicating overnight parking was not allowed and after checking with the manager she confirmed they no longer allowed it. Bummer! Now we had to figure out where to go. I should have checked first before spending time and money in a store that would not host us for the night.
Oh- I was looking all over Wal-Mart for hummus. I asked a couple of workers and got a blank stare when I asked. They looked at me like I was from another planet. I am upset I left my hummus and bagels in the house. Not sure when I will be able to find some.
We decided to drive to Elizabethtown. Instead of taking another chance at Wal-mart we called and booked a site in a private campground. The place did not have good ratings, but we only need electricity for the night and plan to leave early tomorrow. We got a pull through site, fairly level and they have a small pool. It's no resort, but fine for a couple of nights. I am not sure why the bad reviews. Oops, we got a pull through site, but I made Gil pass the road that we were supposed to turn into. Now we were one road over and past our site. He was not a happy camper to have to circle around in the dark. I suggested to go in reverse down the road and then back in the RV into our site - "are you crazy?!". It was already dark. I got out to check and it was not far at all, a couple of feet and he could start turning into our site. I guided him since it was dark and he did a great job.
Tomorrow we visit two places. Abraham Lincoln Birthplace and Mammoth Cave National Park.
