This trip was built around a visit to The Grand Canyon and all the other stops were frosting on the cake. Grand Canyon did not disappoint, even though many of the other places visited so far were majestic in their own way. For me God's fingerprints can be clearly seen in nature and it has been a true blessing to see it firsthand.
Today we left Grand Canyon through Desert View drive which leads to the east entrance. We made a stop at Watchtower to take in the views one last time and check what the tower is about. Our goal today is to get to Holbrook, AZ about 200 miles away, but we will drive more due to the planned side trips. By the way there is a glass platform at the GC on Navajo land where you can walk out over the canyon which we skipped. I felt that at $75 the price was a little steep for the experience. We have walked on glass surface before at that height and it's not something we enjoy.
We took a detour to Meteor Crater, supposedly an asteroid made the hole. One way or another is a pretty big hole in the ground. My father-in-law was not impressed and we thought it was kind of expensive for what you do there when comparing to visiting other similar or better attractions for half the cost..
After this visit we were on a mission, I wanted to get to north side of Petrified Forest NP - Painted Desert. I read sunset its the time to visit and see it paint the hills in vibrant colors. It was a mostly sunny day, but there were some clouds lingering low covering the sun, obstructing it from painting the hills with the promised colors, however it was a pretty nice sun set.
We now had the choice to drive on where we probably could not find a place to stay for miles or drive back to Holbrook about 20 miles. We decided to drive back. I made a reservation at the KOA in town and they recommended a nice restaurant for dinner. We had a nice Italian dinner at La Mesa and then spend the night at the PF KOA. Tomorrow we continue East toward home, but still have some sightseeing planned to break up the drive.
