We got up early today to head out to explore the park. We are staying at Trailer Village Campground - the one that takes large RVs and has full hookups. The GC in the South Rim has a shuttle system, and while some people find it too commercialized and crowded, I am thankful for the convenience. Since we do not pull a car, going places where we can park the RV and not have to drive it around for us to enjoy the area is a big bonus for us. One day we will probably pull a car, but for now visiting places that offer transportation or have easy access to park the RV is a big plus for us. Most people that blog their RV travel hardly ever comment on this, since most have a tow and getting around is not an issue for them, so I have to dig deep sometimes to find out this sort of information.
We spend the day exploring Grand Canyon. We got on the blue shuttle right on our campground and headed towards Bright Angel Lodge. We hiked down part of the way of the Bright Angel trail where we got into the Canyon and were able to get a closer look. After that we walked over to the Red shuttle line and rode the bus that stopped at most of the viewpoints to explore the area.
Thinking of words to describe the Canyon... it's immense. You really have to see it with your own eyes to grasp the enormity of it. No wonder God promised not to destroy the earth with water again. After we were done exploring the red route we headed to the Maswik lodge to get lunch and plan the rest of the day. We needed to take the blue route to the Visitor Center where we could transfer to the orange route. Everyone was tired and were leaning more towards going back to the campground, but I came all the way here to see this and I am not going to potentially miss something great, besides it was early in the afternoon. We agreed I could pick three stops to explore.
One day is not enough to check out all the spots and hike, especially if you go to the bottom, but it's enough to get a taste of it. For those not into hiking and exploring, one day is enough to just stare at it. Also, many people recommend the train ride to the Canyon. Let me inform you this is not a train that takes you into the Canyon, it's just a train that rides from a town on the south and stops near the Bright Angel Lodge. Most packages include a Bus tour of the Canyon, but you can do this in the free shuttles at your own pace, instead of having to stick to a tour schedule.
