Had a good trip across The Cook Strait, though it was a shame I was woken just after 2.30 by an announcement that we were underway. I was soon back asleep. Woke early enough to see us sailing through the amazing Totaranui, aka Queen Charlotte Sound, in moonlight.
Today has probably been the hottest day since I arrived.
Disembarked at 6.45, by which time the sun was just about making an appearance above the mountains. I headed west from Picton to Waikawa in time to catch sight of the InterIsland ferry sailing through Totaranui.
Passing back through Picton, I followed Queen Charlotte Drive as it in turn followed Queen Charlotte Sound eastwards, stopping off at many viewpoints and taking numerous photos.
Having reached the end/start of Queen Charlotte Sound, I drove alongside Kenepuru Sound for about 30km to Portage, along a very twisty road, stopping occasionally to take photos.
Resuming my eastward journey, I broke for lunch in Havelock, which is a pretty little coastal resort. From one of the many bakeries I enjoyed a bacon, egg and hash brown buttie.
Then followed an hour long drive to the city of Nelson. With road names including Trafalgar, Victory, Hamilton and many others associated with the Admiral, it is obvious that the founding fathers somewhat admired him.
Having checked in to the Hamilton room in Trafalgar Lodge on Trafalgar Street, I spent an hour or so exploring the city. It has many open spaces, one named Trafalgar Park, a marina, and a river running through the centre. However, the most stunning aspect are the surrounding hills.
As I write this in my room, I'm being treated to a free jazz concert courtesy of some event taking place up the road in the Trafalgar Stadium in Trafalgar Park.
Today, JB clocked up just 195km, so a relatively gentle introduction to the South Island.
