Another wet start to the day!
I commenced with a short drive to Rere, to see another waterfall that I couldn't fit in yesterday. By the time I'd got there, the rain had stopped. However, despite the recent rain the falls were more dripping than flowing, but impressive non the less, and you could get right close to their bottom.
Then a drive down the Pacific Coast towards Napier, and it started raining again. About halfway down it was lunch time so I stopped at the 287 Cafe, just south of Wairoa, and had a very yummy cheese, ham and pineapple toastie, absolutely overflowing worry filling.
Resuming the journey south, it was still raining but with about 20km to go, the sun came out and stayed with me for the rest of the day.
Napier is known as The Art Deco Capital of The World, but why? The city, and Hawke's Bay in general, was devastated in the 1931 by a massive earthquake. The photo shows the devastation. As the art deco movement was in vogue, it was rebuilt in that style.
After checking into my motel I spent the afternoon exploring the city on foot. It is a beautiful place. The sea front has many facilities, including a cycle track set out like roads with traffic lights to help young cyclists learn, a massive skate park and a lovely sunken garden.
The central part has many art deco buildings mainly along two roads, Emerson Street and Tennyson Street.
After a light tea, it was back to the motel for a relaxing evening.
Today, we drove only 280km.
