Today dawned wet and dull, but that was ok as there was a lot of driving to do in the morning and it soon brightened up.
I headed for Te Urwera National Park on the eastern side of the island. State Highway 38 crosses the park but is unsealed for about 100km, so makes for an interesting drive.
In the centre of the park sits Lake Waikaremoana, which translates as sea of rippling water, and is an impressive sight. The are a number of short walks, some of which lead to waterfalls. I visited the beautifully named Bridal Veils Falls, Aniwaniwa Falls and the most impressive of all, Papakorito Falls. This last one must be amazing when it's rained a lot.
A drive out of the Park brought me to Te Reinga Falls. To be honest, this was disappointing as the lookout did not give a good view.
As if I hadn't done enough driving, I took a diversion along the SH2, which meanders through the mightily impressive Waipaoa Gorge.
In all, JB and I covered a grand total of 755km today, the vast majority of which was through stunning scenery. I think we should both sleep well tonight!
