Franz Josef to Queenstown - Friday 9th to 12th December 2011
Today we're heading to Queenstown via Lake Matheson (Mirror Lake) and down through the mountains to Hasst pass and Makarora, passing by the lakes Wanaka and Hawea. We also stopped off at the world renowned bungy site (A.J. Hacket) where Sarah and some of the gang took to the bridge to face their fate. I can't see the attraction in this to be honest. Seems a lot of $$$$ for a few seconds of terror.
Once in Queens town there was not much to do apart from go out and enjoy the local alcoholic beverages and watering holes. Plans here changed with Stuart Island swapped for anextra night in Queenstown. Georgie believes this was done for her benefit, but I can assure everyone for the record that this was not the case.
The evening events were……….let's say interesting and eventful. Georgie has even managed to put the vacuum packing off for one night. Tonight was also this night that I met Ibra - my European brother from France. Both Georgie and I drunk outside the hostel (classy) managed to string a sentence together without scaring the poor lad off. Ibra seemingly is going to be in Melbourne around the same time as me and so we've arranged to hook up.
There was understandable a few sore heads in the morning and in Queenstown there is only one remedy, a Ferg Burger! Renowned as one of the best burgers in the land it did not disappoint, and to top it off there was also a Ferg Bakery next door!
It's also the start of the big breakup ;-( Johnny, Jenna and Amy are heading further down to Stuart Island, so it'll be only Georgie and I left. Team Ream is finally spreading their wings.
Without knowing what else we could do to soften the pain, we all decided to basically go for an afternoon binge on cider. The best bit about this adventure was the fact that upon presentation of an apple at the bar, you could exchange it for a free cider (happy days). Joining us all on this sad farewell drink was Sarah and Anna who equally will be missed just as much. But I suppose this is the name of the game.
There appears to be a lack of photos from the evening performances, which in hindsight is probably for the best.
Team reem then became two, and Georgie and I decided to have a much needed break from one another. So I went for a spot of shopping in the city and then took the sky line cable car up to the top of the hill and went for a little exploration and a few photo opportunities. Georgie on the other hand went on a Lord of the Rings tour, which to be honest I would have rather stuck pins in my eyes then have to contend with that tripe ;-)
Once the sun had set it was time for us both to drop the hate and live in harmony once again. So after making Jenna's birthday card of must have New Zealand phrases and downing half a bottle of wine, we joined Sarah and Anna down on the beach for a little tipple at sunset (sounds a lot more classy then what it actually was, but was choice)
So my last full day in Queens town was spent on the Milford Sound cruise. A very early start saw me on a Juicy Cruse with Georgie. A very knowledgeable driver kept us entertained for the long drive and stopped off along the way at some tourist spots. We also stumble across a production company filing the next instalment of the lord of the Rings, but were swiftly moved on after our driver pulled over so we could take a butchers at what was going on.
The highlight of the day however was our surprise passengers leaving for the Milford cruise one boat in front of us…….yes you guessed it, Johnny, Jenna and Amy! Although Georgie and myself did not get a chance to speak to them, we did manage to holler like two school children in order to catch their attention.
