Melbourne, Australia - 17th to 22nd December 2011
So once again I find myself back in the place I fell in love with 3 years. After hunting out some of the local hostels in the St Kilda area I've booked myself into the Habitat HQ, and as a little treat I've booked a double room. At $100 a night this is only a one off treat!
Melbourne is my chill out time, so I took to wondering the city and wasting the day away on St Kilda beach. Upon seeing the mouth of Luna Park I was thrown back in time to the days of Chesham Road, Mr Waite and Secret Life Of Us. I've suddenly got an urge to start season one again.
David and Michael introduced me to their friend from Melbourne via Facebook and text message. So I've hooked up with him for breakfast. Nice chap and a nice breakfast (Thanks Paul). Unfortunately my stay was not long enough to catch up again, but never the less nice to meet up with a friend of a friend.
Later in the afternoon I took to the streets looking for a haircut…..NEVER AGAIN! I ended up with some angry Goth conducting some form of hair rape on me ;-)
A couple of days into Melbourne and I'm joined once again my Ibra, who is visiting friends in north Melbourne. It's really good to see a familiar face again, and someone that I've enjoyed spending time with.
I'd heard through the hostel about the Penguins which appear on the end of the pier rocks at dusk, and sure enough the rocks were filled will the black and white furry animals and the cry's which at times sounded rather like something you'd hear coming from Steve Loves bedroom. Anyway, I decided to take Ibra to see these following my little explore the night before. It was well worth it and beat paying $200 to see them in Philips Island.
As another little treat we went out for a bite to eat and even a bottle of wine (unheard of in the back packing world - more like glamour packing).
Over dinner we had a chat about the West coast as we're seemingly both in the area at the same time. We've therefore decided to hire a campervan and head up the West coast for ten days, starting in Perth, but yet to decide what direction to go in. Either way we'll be hooking back up on the 5th January.
For my final night I've moved from St Kilda to the city to be closer to the bus port. This is where I've been introduced to my first YHA hostel…..where have they been hiding! Clean and not so full of the bougs I've been used to in the last few weeks. Reckon the YHA will be the way forward from now on………
4am start so a quick bite to eat with Ibra and an early night.
Bye bye Melbourne.
