We spent some time this afternoon at the information centre at Normanton where we met a very helpful guy named Chris. He told us some history about the area. The building was built by Burns Philp, general traders in the late 1800s, it was the largest in Australia and provided the miners with supplies during the gold rush at Croydon Qld. There was a rail line built between the two towns to carry the supplies from the ships. Normanton is also home to the giant crocodile named Kris that was killed in the 1950s and measured 8 metres, they have a stone replica in the town. Chris recommended that we stay at Karumba instead of Normanton and I'm glad we did. We have reached the gulf coast at Karumba. It's great to see the sea again. We are staying at Karumba Point Sunset caravan park right on the coast. The weather has been hot and beginning to feel a little humid. The park is planted with palms everywhere and feels quite tropical. We had barramundi for dinner from the fish and chip shop,it was yum! The tide was out, exposing mangroves, and I saw a young lady go for a walk over there and she sunk in mud over her knees silly ...... We had a problem with the electrics from the trailer battery, it melted the cable and plugs and started to melt the stone guard, we noticed when we stopped to take a picture of ant hills. Lucky we caught it before it did more damage. We saw lots of kangaroos, they are only small up here. We also saw dozens of brolgas sharing the same feeding areas as the brahma cattle. A large cargo ship sailed into the estuary and river late this arvo which surprised me, I didn't think the water was that deep but it turns out that they have been travelling inland about 40 klms to Normanton since the late 1800s to bring mining equipment for the gold mines. I saw some very pretty birds today not sure what they are but two types, very colourful, with sweet songs.
