Our dear sweet Buneos Aires, the epicentre of Argentina with its vibrant classy european flavour. Heading to the San telmo area of downtown was a great call, with all types of arty boutiques, antique stores, traditionally kempt coffee shops oozing 1920 styles. The grand buildings detailing their fall from grace during the early 1900´s resulting from the deadly plague, sending the rich to pastures anew.
We embraced this city with an air of curiosity, our first day jumping on and off the excellent subway system, feeling with a sadness that Buenos Aires has more of a New York vibe than New York itself......
Visited the main Plaza where Evita gave her magnetic speeches to the masses. This area is now home to many demonstrations with a strong police presence.Unfortuntaley the weather took a turn for the worst and we fled to our hotel ending the evening watching the BRITS accompanied by a bottle of red wine and snacks!
Tom a couchsurfer, kindly offered his home in the Northern part of downtown where his apartment overlooked one of the grandest hotels in the city as well a river crossing view to Uruguay. Our plans were to make our way across the river to tour Uruguay, however the weather was extremely poor, with us huddled under Tom´s very large umbrella throughout most of the day further halting our plans for exploration in Uruguay.
A cemetary located within close proximity is of a large attraction, it sounds very strange and until you glance upon this area of unique burial passages it cannot be contemplated, although we have uploaded a few pictures to view. Large chambers underground are housing several members of the same family, with recently deceased members in closed caskets on display.......eerie. The buildings housing these coffins were produced using vast amounts of money, made of marble, statues depicting angels protecting souls. All these buildings were indeed unique and these areas of burial are kept for the rich and famous.....as they are the only ones that can afford it ! We spent time walking through the many alleys, reading plaques, admiring the granduer and we happened upon Evitas chamber which was modest, noticable only by the freshly dressed flowers.
Market day was very entertaining and light with a sense of community. Many artists, craftsmen and entertainers were present, offering their services. We brought freshly made mutlicereal bread.....mate tea and holder....finally a painting depicting the sultry dance of tango. The air was alive with constant buzz, exchanges of laughter and pleasantries.
Tom and his son Luca were a true inspiration with conversations on buddhism, politics and healthy living. An individual that lives his life with a sense of honesty and buddhist ideals. He introduced us back into healthy eating with his kitchen being a great place to prepare homemade healthy foods and drinks! Thank you for the Bengal Spice......yummy! His well stocked kitchen would give Gillian Mckeith a run for her money!
We decided after a week of relaxation, watching movies, sightseeing and shopping that we should move on......our next destination was chosen for its location........sun, sea and icecream!
