It's only day 2 and I can already tell this holiday is going to be the detah of me. Wish I'd had the fitbit today cos where we've not walked is no ones business!
We walked to Union Square this morning. It was starting to warm up and the fog had burned away. Nick chose the venue for breakfast and despite my reservations it was actually really nice. I had a bacon, egg and cheese bagel and, in case that was s***, I got a donut and a coffee too. It was all really nice so I ate the lot! From there we walked to the Cable Car museum. It didnt look that far on the map but looks can be deceiving! It was bloody miles and up some of the biggest hills. I'm not joking when I say I thought I might have a heart attack! My legs felt like they wanted to explode. By the time we got there I was in urgent need of a drink. Luckily there was a quirky little cafe right opposite the museum. We went in there and they were playing 'Moon River'. It was lovely. We sat outside in the sun, having a drink while their music whafted out into the street.
We had a little mooch around the museum which amused Nick no end. I wasn't entirely sure what I was looking at for the most part and staggered about like a pissed person cos I still felt odd. From there it was more traipsing. This time to China Town. We wandered around the shops selling all sort of weird and wonderful stuff. Herbs and spices, chinese medicine, Geisha outfits for 2 year olds and even creepy crawlies set in plastic. It was really busy, really smelly and baking hot. Little Chinese men played funny little instruments and the tinny noise carried along the heaving steets.
We found a little restaurant for lunch and ate dim sum on the sun drenched balcony, watched by half a dozen pidgeons. We had a starbucks for afters and, much to my surprise, we walked all the way home. My feet were on fire by the time we got back and I've got a blister on my toe the size of a pea. Time for a quick bit of respite before we were out the door again. This time it was back where we'd been to AT&T for the Baseball. I'd have keeled over if we'd had to walk again so we jumped in a cab. It was sooo busy! I can't imagine how many people they fit into that place. Once we got inside it was a sea of people. The outside is full of shops selling sports gear and street vendors selling all sorts of food. Tater tots, corn dogs, Garlic Fries, hot dogs and fried sprouts! Brussel sprouts. Whats that all about? It was like a wind tunnel and quite chilly even though it was still sunny. We saw memorabillia for thousands of pounds, tops worn by the team members, bats, balls and even used bases. People actually buy this stuff!
Fans were snatching the stuff up like their lives depended on it. We saw the opeining ceremony thing and this old bloke (a vet) sang the national anthem. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, in the place stopped what they were doing to stand up and listen. It was lovely. Really quite emotional. I had quite a lump in my throat. Once he'd finished we made our way to our seats. We had a really good view. It didnt really matter cos we didnt really know what was going on. It was still good fun. Other people, who did know what was going on, got really carried away. Whooping and clapping and singing songs.
A young couple sat next to Nick and they said it probably wouldn't end til about 10pm. It was already 7pm at that point but we knew we wouldnt be sat there until the end. They went off to get some food and when they came back they swapped seats so the girl wasn't sitting next to Nick. Clearly the boyfriend wasnt happy about that seating arrangement. Tickled me.
We had a beer and watched the game til almost 8pm. We had a hotdog for Nick and some stinking galric fries for me (big mistake) and we left thinking we'd get a cab before the crowds spilled out. Wrong!! We stood on the street corner for ages. We couldnt get a cab for love nor money. It was dark, cold and this city is run alive with weirdos. I was crapping my pants I dont mind telling ya. We got sick of waiting so started walking, thinking we'd find a cab on the way. Wrong again. I thought I couldnt walk another step but I found a renewed energy. I wasn't hanging about in those dodgy streets. We made it almost back to Union Square before we finally found a cab. I nearly cired with relief! Talk about dramatic. We made it back just in time for last orders in Starbucks. We need not have bothered though, we were in bed and asleep before we even had a chance to drink it.
