These entries are all getting a bit samey now. They all start off with what a fab day we've had. Today was no exception. Breakfast seems like so long ago. We went to Juices famous River café. Not sure what its famous for. They could have made that bit up for all I know. A simple brekko was included in the price of our room. Scrambled eggs with bacon, hash brown, biscuit and a drink. We ordered one lot of nutty cinnamon French toast too. Nick ate part of my savory stuff so I had room for the sweet. He's good like that. Taking one for the team.
We loaded up the car, yet again. Each time there's just a tiny bit more than the time before. I went and checked out and the bloke om reception asked me about my camera and what I've been taking pictures of. Little does he know. I said mainly scenery because it's so beautiful. He said 'Don't you have much desert in England?' Hmmm.
We got some amazing pics of the Route 66 sign on the floor outside the hotel. Nick positioned the car so it could be in the photos. Good job it's got such lovely clean windows! It's just as well we took the Route 66 photos when we did. Little did we know we wouldn't see any more.
The journey here was a mixture of Route 66 and freeway. Route 66 has been a bit elusive so far and the bits we have seen haven't been all that. We decided we'd rather get the journey out of the way so we could just relax. And that's exactly what happened.
We still took plenty of pics along the way but none of the journey was anything to write home about. I don't know why it didn't dawn in us sooner but we've got lovely pics of me, lovely pics of Nick and lovely pics of the car but it seems we have no lovely pics of us together. The bloody tripod is in the boot of the car for that very purpose. Why we haven't got it out I'll never know. Must make more effort to get some of us together other than just crappy selfies.
Because we didn't prat about on the '66 we got here much sooner than we anticipated. 1.30pm in fact. About 2 hours sooner than expected. I thought Flagstaff, and subsequently the hotel, was desert. It's not. It's quite green and surrounded by a couple of national forests. Thinking it was desert made me assume it would be nice and hot. Wrong again. It's been really sunny but its only in the 60's and pretty blowy. Makes it feel quite chilly. We took all our stuff inside, taking note of the sign on the door that said we weren't allowed any guns inside, and checked in. We made our way to our room and I for one was amazed at how posh it is! The room is massive with his and hers sinks and a massive walk in shower. I was like something demented running about taking it all in. We briefly contemplated laying on the bed to watch tele but opted instead for having a wander and sussing the place out so Nick could get his bearings.
We had a wander round the casino and I was well taken with the fact they have self-service drink stations. Soft drinks, tea and coffee, all for free. They'll clearly go to any lengths to prevent you from leaving. Despite the fact we could get coffee for free we went to the little coffee shop. More to warm us up than quench a thirst. In for a penny and all that, we got coffees AND cake.
We found the pool area and just like everything else in America, it was massive. It had a big hot tub and loads of loungers. It was practically empty which I was both surprised and chuffed about. Just down the corridor they had a room full of play stations and xboxes. $5 got you an hours play. Nick was really taken with that idea, even though the bloke said they don't normally get people as old as Nick in there haha! Nick fancied a racing game and I fancied some time by the pool. So that's exactly what we did. We went our separate ways. I took my kindle and plotted up on a lounger and Nick took his pocket money and went off to play. For the longest time I was the only person in there. I had a quick swim but the water was cold. Instead I submerged myself in the near to boiling water of the hot tub. I lolloped around all by myself for ages. Once I'd turned myself into a prune I positioned myself on my lounger, wrapped in hotel towels like and Egyptian mummy, and read my kindle. It was deathly quiet. We've been so busy charging about, taking in so much, it was nice to just sit quietly and be totally alone. It gave me ample opportunity to reflect on the last week or so too. It feels like we have been gone for ages. The different places we've been and the things we've seen have made it feel like loads of different holidays. When I think back over what's happened already it beggars belief.
Nick appeared after his hour racing and we both got in the hot tub. A few more people petered in but it was still far from busy. All that racing wore him out so, covered up with a towel like a child, he had a little nap. Gave me a bit more time with my kindle so I wasn't about to complain. I left him there just long enough to start snoring and then I woke him up so we could get ready for tea. Prime Rib buffet no less.
We went back to our room and found the key card not working. Nick has a habit of whipping in and out faster than the machine can read it but after half a dozen tries we were still locked out. Luckily, I had my key so I pushed him aside to show him how its done. Nothing! I tried and tried by my card wouldn't work either. Back down to reception we go to tell them our woe's and get new cards. Would you believe there was nothing wrong with the cards, we were at the wrong door!! Imagine if someone had been in there and we were trying to get into their room. I was cracking up. Fancy getting the wrong room. We took a wrong turn out of the lift and everything looks like same so it was an easy mistake to make. That's my excuse anyway and I'm sticking to it.
Finally inside the right room we got ready to stuff our faces. The buffet was cheap and very tasy. Plenty of choice. Nick was most excited about the prime rib. I had some but was less impressed. Although it was succulent and tender it was a bit pink for my liking. After dinner we played a couple of machines. Luck was clearly on my side as, despite not having a clue what I was doing, I managed to win $54. You'd have thought I'd wont the lottery. I was so excited I almost puked. I had to take pictures of my cash token thing. I could not believe my eyeballs! Later in I slipped a dollar in another machine and win 5 more. Nick decided at that point that I probably couldn't cope with too much more excitement and we should quite while we were ahead. A lovely note to end the evening on. That and some free coke. It was all going my way. That was until I opened the Dior perfume I bought and discovered it was the wrong one. A giant bloody bottle too!!
Have set the clock for 6.30am. Want an early start for the Canyon. We've got a lot of ground to cover. Thinking we probably won't get to Vegas until after tea time.
