Good news! Nick slept in this morning. It was 6.30 before we got up. I made coffee put on my hoodie and went straight outside. What a way to wake up on a monday. Looking out to sea, completely deserted beach nothing filling my ears but the wind and the sound of the waves. Sp perfect. We saw dolphins again too. It was chilly, blowing a gale and everythig I could have wanted.
We headed straight to Fishermans Whaft for whale watching. We had a quick bit of breakfast first, right on the wharf. It was warm and sunny and a peliacn flew by while I was eating my toast. Popped a seasick tablet, jut to be on the safe side, and we were off. I was dreading it a little bit. I was excited to see that whales but less excited at the pospect of puking my guts up. For most of the trip it was quite smooth. It seems not everyone thought so though, and I saw more than one person, green around the gills, spewing. I did start to feel a bit queasy for the last half hour but I was a brave girl and I did alright.
We went outside and saw half a dozen Hump Back whales. Seals swim with the whales so it makes them easy to spot. I got some really good pics despite the bobbing of the boat and the bobbing of the other passengers heads. Nick wore the Gopro on his head so while I snapped away merrily he captured the whole thing on film. Hump back whales right there in front is us. Who'd have thought it. Before we came away I said I wanted to see an Orca and that if we didnt I'd be really gutted. Well, we didnt see any and I wasnt one bit gutted. The lack of Killer whales didnt make the experience any less thrilling. How many people get to see this? Hump backs feeding in the middle of the Ocean. They are enormous and so graceful. I've never seen anything like it in my life. Nick reckons he didnt really want to go but when the look out woman announced whales were visible, he was off an running like opening day at the Next sale.
We came straight back here after for a quick costume change. I had hair like a rats back and wanted to get changed for lunch. We really should have a revolving door on our hotel, all this coming and going. Our room looks like an explosion took place and I havent seem my pj bottoms since we got here!
We went to Carmel for lunch. Hogs Breath Inn. It was Nicks choice of venue. Clint Eastwood used to be the owner. It was a funny little place and we sat outside in the courtyard. It was Nicks turn to get excited and at one point I actually thought he might cry. While it wasn't that big of a deal for me, it was massive for him. It wasnt until he ordered his 'Dirty Harry Burger' that it dawned on me just how exciting it must have been.
Carmel on the whole is really quaint. At first glance its all tree lined streets and courtyards but on closer inspection its a bit poncy. All art galleries and posh shops. We drove through to have a look but didnt even get out of the car. Far too posh for us!
Our 3rd and final stop was the Sardine Factory. Turns out we were almost on top of it yesterday at Cannery Row and we didnt even know. Again we found a parking metre with half hour on it. Winner! Time enough for Nick to take loads of pictures. And then for me to take loads of pictures of him while he stood on the stairs. The very stairs Clint Eastwood stood on. We only watched 'Play Misty for Me' the other day and now he's here. Think it was all a bit too much for him. He's been like a coiled spring. Its so rare that Nick actuallly gets excited about anything I not sure how to handle him. I find the best thing to do is just ignore him. Or feed him. Took him to Pinkberry for frozen yogurt and the enormity of what just happened to sink in. I had raspberries on my yogurt and realised its the first fruit I've had since we arrived! My poor body must wonder what the hell is going on.
Came back to the hotel and as we pulled up in the car I could see the spray from a whales blow hole. $90 and 3 hours on a boat whale watching and I see one from the beach outside our room. We went to the bar for the evening and sat in the window watching the sun set. Nick was meant to film it but he cocked it up and instead of time lapse, we've ended up with a 1000 photos. Great. I wrote, Nick faffed with his phone and got the cold shoulder from the bar maid because he didnt tip her. We ate Nachos and chicken wings and whiled away a couple of hours in luxurious surroundings. We tipped the lovely waiter we had and as soon as moody found out she was all over us. Nicks new best friend it seemed, once she know he had a couple of quid. Cheeky mare.
