Its 8.30pm and we're sitting by the fire round the pool. It's nothing short of spectacular. We are having the very best time. To the point I almost cried earlier. We've had a really long day of driving. We left early to beat the LA rush hour traffic. Although we beat most of it, there was still quite a bit. It took about 3 hours to get to Emma Jeans Diner, what with the coffee stops for me and smoking breaks for him. We've see the diner on the tele (diners, drive ins and dives) and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The food, service and price was really impressive. We had breakfast. Ham and eggs for Nick and a sandwich for me, plus pancakes for me and a peach cobbler for Nick. The woman must have wondered when we last ate! It was divine. We drove some of Route 66, stopping along the way so I could take yet more pictures, and so that Nick could polish the windows on the poxy car! He is obsessed with it. Every opportunity he gets he's there with his giant roll of kitchen paper and a bottle of window cleaner. He even contemplated putting it on the car wash earlier. What the hell for? It's not ours.
Had he spent more time looking at the fuel level and less time p1ssing about with the windows, he might have noticed the fuel light come on. Instead he waits til we're in the back @rse of beyond and nonchalantly says "oh, we might need some fuel." MIGHT!! I'd say we definitely would be needing some fuel. We were miles from anywhere. I was ready to hyperventilate at the thought of being stranded and boiling to death. We had to ask a local where the gas station was as we couldn't find one. I was so relieved when we finally found it. $30 fills it up. I know this cos nicks told me nearly every day since we got here. That and just how many car washes there are. Between us we know every single car wash and Starbucks in California. We've been in 2 Starbucks today alone. I wish I'd thought to count them sooner.
We only saw a bit of Route 66 today. It's sad how run down and derelict it all is. We decided to hop onto the freeway for a while. There's only so much abandoned land you can look at. What a fabulous decision by us that was. We still got see the mile and mile of mountains and arid land but we got here early enough to relax. We made here by 4.30pm. We threw our bags in the huge room, grabbed our swimmers and headed off to the pool. We've been here ever since. The whole pool area was in the shade when we arrived and we thought that was a bad thing. We were wrong. It was so hot. 95 degrees. We potted up on loungers and soaked up the atmosphere. It's wood and terracotta and has an almost Mediterranean feel. We got in the hot tub and poached ourselves, as if we weren't already warm enough. Nick went to the shop and bough beer which is enough to keep him amused all night. He'll sit anywhere for as long as you like proving he's got a beer.
Just when I though it couldn't get any lovelier, they lit the fire out and lights all around the place. We moved our stuff and have been sat here, beside the fire for hours. It's still 80 degrees so why I feel the need to be by the fire I'll never know. It's fabulous though. We had Subway salad for tea and filmed ourselves in the hot tub. There's half a dozen more people here now but for the longest time it was just us. We had the whole place to ourselves. Just how I like it. We've had the time of our lives. Just us. No one else. Nothing to do and no-where to go. I don't think I could be any happier than I am at this moment in time. I feel like I could burst.
Tomorrow we're heading along Route 66 again towards Navajo. Think we'll use the Freeway too so we can arrive at a reasonable time and make the most of the facilities. Cannot believe we only arrived a week ago today. 1 down. 2 to go
