Hola!!
I am writing to you from San Jose...back where we started! Today we had our last shift at the Orphanage and said goodbye to our host family (temporarily!) It was really really sad saying goodbye to the kids, I have really enjoyed living and working like a real Tico and I am loving the way of life here and living in Palmares. We are both excited to get travelling again and we have so much on our list of ´things to see´but removing ourselves from the everyday life and routine we have made for ourselves is harder than we thought...the best thing about working and living in Costa Rica was feeling like a part of the Community and not being just another ´tourist! Living the life is definetly the best way to get a feel of the Country, and what an amazing Country!! We have had a blast so far!! (...I don´t want it to end!)
Last night Marita and Edgar took us on a little bar crawl (in the car...drink driving is very much the norm here!) So we hopped in the jeep and went for a few ´Cerveza´s in some of the local bars. It was lot´s of fun, and quite an experience visiting a local bar! It was very very local and one of those experiences when everyone turns their head when you walk through the door! The best part of the night was when Edgar let Josh drive the rattety tattey jeep back home (many cervezas later!) It was a bumpy ride, but so much fun! ...quite tricky getting up the big hills as the jeep is so old it tends to roll backwards, but Josh gave it his best shot! (a little tipsy to say the least!) A great experience!
After our final shift this morning we went home to pack our things and also meet one of Maritas friends who has come to stay from Colorado, USA. She was also volunteering and living with our homestay family ealier this year and loved it so much she has been back five times since! She had bought a huge suitcase of toys and clothes for the kids at the Orphanage as well as gifts for the Tias. It was a shame we had to leave to get our bus to San Jose as Terra seemed like a lot of fun and had bought another suitcase full of halloween costumes!
Before catching the bus we said goodbye to Marita and she is so ´mumsy´she let us keep half of our stuff at the house so we didn´t have to carry two full backpacks for two weeks as we travel around Costa Rica. Unfortunetly I found it a lot more difficult that Josh to part with my clothes so I pretty much have a full backpack and haven´t left much at all...but no suprise Josh managed to fit two weeks worth of stuff in his small shoulder bag! Ha!...Oh how opposite we are! We are planning to go back for the rest of our stuff the day before our flight and also to see Marita and the family one more time before we leave! (Another blub I predict!)
So...we are in our hostel in San Jose and are catching the bus to Montezuma beach tomorrow. We then plan to head to Manuel Antonio and a place called Tortugeuro. Terra is also planning on heading to Manuel Antonio the same time as us so hopefully will catch up with her again.
Being back in San Jose is very strange and it is hard to believe a whole month has passed since we were last here! Today we took our first San Jose Taxi (it was that or get mugged at the horrible scary bus station!) and oh dear god...it probably would of been less scary to get mugged! The Taxi driver drove like a maniac! There are no lanes and the roads in San Jose are a´Free for all!´At one point we almost ended up bashing into a bus! There was no stopping at red lights and he drove so so fast! You also have to keep all bags under your legs when in taxis in the city as (apparently) it is quite common for people to grab your bags through the windows! Greeeeat! So, yep... I very much disliked my first San Jose Taxi experience!
We are off now to lay in the hammocks and start some friday night drinking!
Adios! x
