Buenas Dias! It´s day 5 here in Costa Rica and we are slowely shaking off the jet lag and getting used to the hot and humid weather.
We´ve had a fun couple of days both relaxing at the hostel and down at the beach. Yesterday we got up at 6am to go on an organised tour which started with a traditional Costa Rican breakfast of fried rice and beans, scrmbled eggs, fried Planton and cheese, and a delicious cup of Costa Rican Coffee all eaten whilst sat at the top of the Avacado Mountain looking down above the clouds! Hands down the best place I have ever eaten breakfast!
After breakfast we were taken on a Crocodile Safari which was two hours on a boat that travels along a Croc infested river on the edge of the rainforest, it was amazing! We saw howler monkeys, parrots, iguanas and of course, Crocodiles. The Crocs were so close to the edge of the boat it was a little nerve racking and there soon emerged a pattern of all the women on the boat congregating at the back and all the men being ´macho´and sitting by the edge with there arms draped over the side! Half way down the river our guide told us that they had spotted Osama one the the biggest Crocs in the river (over 2 metres long...eeek!) and Osama has a tendancy to hide so that no one can see him and them attack quite viciously! (hence the name!) But luckily (or not so) for us he chose to emerge next to our boat, his eyes peering out of the water where he was almost fully camouflaged! Then, to our suprise our guide ( a Costa Rican ´Steve Irwin wannabe) pulled out a raw chicken and started bashing it on the side of the boat (at this point I was looking for the quickest escape route!) and as he teased Osama he moved slowely closer. Our guide then drove the boat to the river bank where he got out, walked into the water and continued bashing te raw chicken in full view of Osama! What happend next was incredible, Osama came right up to him and instead of feeding him the chicken he continued to tease the Croc by lifting the bait higher and higher in the air. We all sat on the boat hands in front of our eyes praying that our Costa Rican Steve Irwin would not get eaten and we would be driven safely back to base! Eventually the Croc got his food and we were soon on dry land!
The afternoon was spent on a beautiful beach of the Pacific Coast, lined with Palm Trees and next to a stunning lush rainforest. It was absolutely magnificant, it felt like paradise!
This afternoon we are off to meet i-to-i where we will be meeting the other volunteers and beginning our Community Project Volunteer work! (Eeeeh!!)
Adios!
