Today has been our second day in San Jose, Costa Rica and we have succeeded in experiencing our first ´torrential down pour´ and (in typical tourist style) we had no umberella and had forgotten to take our stylish rain macks with us, so we were completely soaked through! This is the first rain San Jose has had for a while, even though we are currently in the height of the rainy season so (ironically) we should have been praising the rain as a lot of the local farmers have been suffering with their crops due to the lack of rain. Very rubbish, but after half an hour walking in a tropical shower...we refused to praise anything!
We woke up this morning feeling a little hungover! We had a late one last night after meeting up with John and being introduced to his Costa Rican friend Michael. Michael is a local ´Tico´who is a student of John´s studying English. After a few beers we foolishly decided it would be a great idea to go to the hostels ´comedy night´where John had agreed to stand up and tell a few jokes. The comedy night all in all was terrible, completely cringe worthy! Johns jokes about jews, black people and prostitues didn´t go down well and Josh, Michael and I spend the evening slumped down in our seats in embarresment. (To paint the picture...John is a 65 year old American with white hair and a large belly!) and was shouted off the stage by people yelling ´go take your viagra!´
The rest of the evening we spent sitting at the bar by the pool drinking and helping Michael with his English in return for some Spanish tutoring and inside knowledge on Costa Rican life.
Apart from our experience of Costa Rican down pours, today has been quite a lazy day! We went to visit the Parc Nacional in the centre of San Jose this morning...which was interesting. We then found a supermarket and got ripped off trying to buy some bread and cheese! (anything but fried beans!) and the remainder of the day has been spent in the hostel garden reading and chatting to people.
Tomorrow we are off on a day trip to the coast (The Pacific side of Costa Rica) for a day in the rainforest, a river tour (including feeding crocs...eek!) and an afternoon on a beautiful tropical beach! Yippeee!
