Hola!
We´ve made it to San Jose! Two long flights and lot´s of sleep deprivation...but finally we are here! We arrived into San Jose last night at 8.30pm Costa Rican time, about 2.30am GMT time so we were extremely tired and spaced out! The heat hit us as soon as we came through the arrivals door at the airport....as did the hundreds of people trying to get us into one of their taxi´s! A little overwhelming when you have just arrived in a new country, especially feeling as tired as we did! Luckily we were being picked up from the airport by someone from our hostel. When we did finally find him amongst the chaos we also met a nice Italian guy called Guiseppie and an American called John, both of whom were also in Costa Rica to volunteer!
The late night drive through San Jose was somewhat hair raising! We were warned how not to walk around the City at night, to keep our backpacks on the front of our body at all times and when in a car hide all belongings as people have a habbit of smashing your windows when you stop at traffic lights, to grab anything on show! ...great! We weren´t bricking at all!
Safely at our hostel we were taken to our nice room and after attempting to unpack we decided to call it a night and went to sleep.
We were woken up this morning by the sunshine shining into our room, after getting our bearings we went to meet Guiseppie and John for a Costa Rica breakfast...fried beans...yum! We then went for a wonder around San Jose...we didn´t get very far as it´s not the nicest City and although most Costa Ricans we have met so far have been extremely friendly, we did get the odd ´Gringo´calls and people staring at us on the street.
The rest of the day today has been spent planning and sleeping! The hostel we are staying at has a beautiful big garden full of sunloungers and hammocks! And a big swimming pool. We have met so many nice people, ate some yummy food and have, at last started to relax a little! We had lunch with our new friend Guiseppie who was leaving this afternoon to travel on to Nicaragua where he will be teaching English, Italian and Maths at a school in Granada.
My thoughts so far on San Jose...it´s not a ¨pretty City", the people are very friendly, the roads are crazy, the food is yummy...until I get bored of fried beans! But so far it´s not too bad. I have even put my pathetic Spanish skills to the test, and after asking for directions in very very bad spanish I was actually understood! Maggs...you would be proud! The jet lag seems to making concentrating on a plan quite difficult...we keep ending up asleep in the hammocks! The only plan we have so far is to start drinking...and it is now drinking time, for me anyway! Josh started at 1pm this afternoon, naturally!
Adios, for now! Hasta Luago!
