Hola, Hola
We have been in Montezuma for the last few days and it is absolutely awesome. We arrived on Saturday and although we had a dodgy start...it was all worthwhile and we are staying in a beautiful hotel next to the beach with a huge balcony and lot´s of swinging hammocks. We have only been here three days but I don´t want to move on...I am definetly taking to the life of a beach bum.
Our arrival didn´t get off to the best start though...we were both very tired when we arrived and checked into the first hostel we could find, when we got taken through to our room we realised we had made a big big mistake, it was horrible. The room was four prison like walls and a square hole for a window. There was one shower for the whole place and no mirrors...and one toilet. I nearly cried... Then, to make things worse I decided to have a look outside as the back of the hostel opened out onto a little beach. I found a rock to sit on and sat for five minutes trying to figure out how we could get out of having to stay in a prison. Then out of no where a dodgy looking man came over and starting talking to me in Spanish, he asked me where and I was from and all the usual questions so I answered them at the same time as trying to discourage the conversation by turning away and the next thing he was grabbing me and trying to kiss me.I took me completely out of the blue and scared the life out of me so I hit him and then legged it to the prison hostel, ran into our room and locked the door. Very scary. When Josh came back I told him what had happend and after going on a rampage to find the man we decided to leave the hostel and get as far away from it as possible.
So, not the nicest of starts...but apart from that Montezuma is one of the coolest places I have ever been. It is a small town of about three streets and there is a huge boho feel to the place, there are organic cafes and bakeries everywhere and every one has either got a surf board lodged under their arm or their hair in dreads. The people here are also really nice...minus the guy that tried to kiss me. And the resturants and bars are also really good. The first thing we did after unpacking was to go for a swim in the sea. The beach is pristine and there is a lot of surf, making the sea lots of fun to swim in. That evening we went to a local football match on the village football pitch and it was game between Montezuma and a small village about 5 minutes away. As well as the game there was music, typical Costa Rican food, lot´s and lot´s of locals and lot´s and lot´s of beer. It was a great night and a lot of fun mixing with the locals, the football wasn´t great and we didn´t have a clue who we were cheering for, but it was a great experience.
Yesterday we made breakfast on the balcony and then went on a hike through the forest to found some natural waterfalls that Montezuma is famous for. The hike was really really tough, much more like a climb than a hike and I have cuts and bruises all over the legs as a result, but what we found was amazing. Beautiful big waterfalls with swimming holes and rock pools. On the hike we also met a couple from Belgium and ended up hiking with them. Josh and the guy went off for an hour or so in search on a large rock to jump off whilst me and Caterina...his girlfriend, relaxed in the water. In the afternoon we all went for lunch and then we took them to the beach near our hotel. Last night we all met up and went out for drinks in a local bar...we spent the evening talking about all the places we had been travelling and drinking lots, then when we left to find food we realised it was reeeally late and everywhere was closed...oops.
Today we haven´t done a lot as we both seem to have caught a cold, but we have been sunbathing on the beach this morning and then I found a cafe that sells Falafel and humous so dragged Josh there for lunch, then we did some more snoozing on the beach. It is so so nice here I don´t want to leave. Montezuma is a place a lot of travellers come to and spend a lot longer than they had anticipated...and I can see why. It´s beach bum Paradise.
