Hi
I hear you have more snow at home - how exciting!!
We arrived in Te Anau last week but have been so busy i've only just got around to writing this entry up!
Te Anau is the gateway to Milford Sounds and Doutful Sounds so we used this as a base to stay while we explored these areas.
Te Anau has a massive, beautiful lake and we stayed on a campsite overlooking this. On arrival in the town we went straight to the information centre and booked our trips to Milford and Doubtful Sounds. As we were booking the two trips together we got an additional trip for free to see the Glow Worm Caves, so that afternoon thats what we did. We waked for about 10 minutes through the caves and then got onto a little rowing boat at the entrance to the glow worm cave and sat in silence looking at them - it was a great experience.
The next day we drove to Manapouri to board our boat to Doubtful Sounds. We sailed along Lake Manapouri first and then boarded a coach to take us across the mountains to the other side and then entrance to Doubtful Sounds. The trip was 3 hours long and luckily we had fantastic weather, the captain of the boat kept reminding us how lucky we were to have such great weather because on a cloudy day you obviously don't get the same effect. That area has approximately 250 days of rain a year and so we were very lucky. Doubtful Sounds was absolutely stunning as you will see from the photos and even those don't do it justice. I hope you don't get too bored of the pictures i know they are a bit repetative but it really was gorgeous in real life!
The next day we drove up to Milford Sounds which is about an hour a half drive away from Te Anau. At Milford Sounds we did a 2 and a half hour boat cruise. The scenery again was great but no where near as beautiful as Doubtful Sounds and quite commercialised. Doubtful Sounds was definately the best out of the two of them!
From Milford Sounds we made our way north to Queenstown where we are now and we will update you again n a few days time.
Hope you are all well. Thanks for the messages, especially yours Matt - our camper is not a Baked Bean on wheels!!!!!!
Take care
Love Claire & Andy xxxxxxx
