When we arrived in Wellington, we met up with Andys cousin Jonathan. We had a lovely evening and went out for a nice meal. It was really great to meet up with him and was such a lovely guy.
The following day we headed up to The Bay of Islands, a three hour drive north. We based ourselves at a campsite in Kerikeri and took trips out to the surrounding areas. The first trip we did was a boat trip around the bays and again we were blessed with excellent weather. About 40% of the islands in The Bay of Islands are inhabited but only have one or two families living on them so they are really tranquil. The boat that we went on delivers the islands mail on its way round and so as soon as the islands residents see the boat coming from the distance they make their way onto the jetty (most with their dogs) to collect the mail and supplies from the boat. On of the dogs had actually learnt to wave at the most coming into dock!!
The next day we drove ourselves out to the little bays along the coast and generally had a relaxing day taking in the beautiful beaches. We also booked ourselves onto a trip for the following day to Cape Reigna and Ninety Mile Beach.
Cape Reigna is the northern most part of New Zealand and to get there the coach had to drive up along the beach. Captain James Cook actually named that part of the coastline Ninety Mile Beach when he discovered that part of New Zealand because of the length of it, but it actual fact it is 64 miles long!!
After driving along the beach, we reached our first stop - the sand dunes. We grabbed a body board, headed to the top of the dunes, which took forever in that heat and then slid down them. It was fantastic, not something you'd do everyday!! See the pics but excuse the blobs on the screen, i think we may have got specs of sand on the lens - oops!
We then made our way up to Cape Reigna. It was quite strange standing at the top of New Zealand and looking out onto both sides of the ocean. One side was the Pacific and the other side the Tamsan Sea.
A great few days spent in The Bay of Islands and a nice way to spend our last days in New Zealand.
Today we're heading down to Auckland - the capital of New Zealand where we'll spend a few days before heading over to Fiji!
Take care
Claire & Andy xxx
