Last Sunday was the Nimes Feria, which was one of the first trips I had when I arrived last year. We kept well away from the bull fighting again, thank goodness because apparently it took quite a bit of work for them to actually kill it this year. We explored a bit more this year, and watched some tango, African dancing and people that for some reason were dressed as tents. We decided to have dinner (paella and sangria of course) in a square of restaurants, and we'd been sitting down for about 10 minutes when a huge band came and set up next to our restaurant. It was really enjoyable to eat dinner while watching them play and the mental woman at the front of the crowd who kept jumping around like she was at a rock concert.
As we'd missed AL's birthday because he was in Italy, LA and I decided to celebrate it on Friday instead. I got him a 'bouquet' of chocolate and LA a scout DVD and some champagne, which we drank on his terrace as the sun was setting. At about 22h we then went into town and had dinner at a new restaurant. It seems summer is finally here as we ate outside with no need for a jumper; something AL wasn't at all bothered about compared to us.
Saturday was Gay Pride and the 'marche des diversités' in Montpellier. I knew we were a gay-friendly town, but apparently we have the 3rd largest Gay Pride in France. We went to Peyrou, where the floats were gathered and marvelled and the 'diversity'. I never realised how many gay people there were here, and the drag queens who were about 7ft tall! At about 15h30 the march started and we followed it through the Comédie and round to the town hall where there was an 'appéro' with a DJ. GL didn't really understand the idea and thought that there would be free food as well for 20,000 people 'because it's an appéro'. We decided to go back to the centre to eat after that disappointment and ended up having pizza near St Roch before heading home to rest our weary feet.
