On Tuesday I had my first taste of raclette thanks to YO. I didn't actually know what it was either before I had it so Wikipedia'd it; it's basically where you melt cheese and put it on things like potatoes and ham etc. It comes from the verb 'racler' which means 'to scrape', as normally you heat a big lump of cheese and scrape off the melted bit. Sounds a bit rubbish I know, but it was actually very nice.
Unfortunately the cold snap has spead to Montpellier, and we've even had some snow, much to the consternation of all Frenchmen. Not that it settled or even fell that hard. I overheard a boy remarking to his pote that 'we might as well be in Paris'. It really is true that if you're from the south of France, anywhere north of Lyon might as well be the Arctic. Saying that it has reached about -7C at night, which IS cold, but they're all being very over-dramatic and questionning if classes will be cancelled. But that's the French for you.
On Friday LA and I went to watch the quarter-finals of the Sud de France Open. For some reason the bus didn't take us to the stadium, so we had to walk through roadworks to get there. After a bit of confusion about where we sitting (of course block F is next to block B) we ended up on the first row after the private boxes; definitely some of the best seats in the house. We watched Gasquet vs Kohlschreiber first; so the crowd were very lively, not least because Gasquet is from Beziers, about 30 mins from here. They also started shouting ALLEZ, but with an odd lilt, which we found funny for about 5 minutes and then really annoying. Sadly for the support he lost in 3 sets, despite them cheering wildly whenever he won a point. We then saw Hanley & Murray vs Zovko & Brown; unfortunately not Andy but Jamie was well worth watching. Nice legs.
