After trawling through several websites looking for a Christmas market to visit, I came upon Avignon. Most people are busy revising at the moment though, so it was LA, GL and CA who accompanied me. As we walked along the central road towards the main square CA bought some roast chestnuts to get in the Christmas mood and had the obligatory picture with the man who was running the stand. To be honest though, I was a bit disappointed with the market, it's not as big or pretty as Montpellier's, and the goods for sale were mostly inferior too. However, we did have a nice wander around, went into the hôtel de Ville and saw the crèche (which is huge and features the cantons that are traditionally made here).
We then made our way up to the Palais des Papes and the surrounding gardens from where we had an amazing view of the surrounding area. As a very late lunch/ early dinner we decided to go to the same restaurant I'd been to 3 years earlier for Dad's 50th birthday. A roaring fire and beef stew made it a very pleasant return. When we left it was dark and the market had suddenly come to life; with the lights on in full force it looked beautiful, and everyone seemed to have come out.
It was a fairly early return to Montpellier as GL and CA wanted to do a bit of revision (for syntagme cat) before bed, and LA and I were going out. Sadly a bit too much fun was had and after getting to sleep at 7am I spent the rest of Sunday feeling slightly worse for wear.
