We headed off from Mira's flat on our way out of Switzerland via Zermatt & the famous Matterhorn.
Little did we know that John's planned journey to our destination via Andermatt would go wrong.
He missed the Andermatt turn off and we ended up travelling through a 17km tunnel with Andermatt our first destination above us.
It wasn't worth backtracking so we decided to continue to Zermatt and found ourselves travelling though a pass 2400m high called St. Gotthardpass / Passo del S. Gottardo. Here we saw more snow than anywhere else so far. We were astounded at the snow that was melting around us but was at least 1m thick in parts. This turned out to be nothing compared with snow that was taller than us and made our hire car look diminutive. Things got better, we approached the top of the pass & a restaurant where there was a small lake with a giant 'iceberg' in it that was tall and highly impressive.
We stopped for a cuppa at there, (great italian coffee - this area is close to the Italian border) & a wind turbine just around the corner. Funnily enough it wasn't noisy, the surrounding waterfalls drowned out any noise it may have caused - maybe Tony Abbott should visit this region and find out how much intelligence he actually lacks.
Driving towards Brigg we spotted a massive swing bridge - Goms Bridge - that we believe was created to allow residents from one side to reach the other side of the valley in order to attend church. Amazingly enough we didn't have to pay a fee to cross this bridge.
John was desperate to get as close as possible to the Matterhorn by taking a chairlift up to the Matterhorn glacier paradise & also taking a cog train ride to Gornergrat .
When we arrived at Tasch a small village before Zermatt we found that cars were not allowed up past this point. The lady at the information station told us that we could get an unlimited train & chairlift / gondola pass for 3 days for 193 Swiss Franks each, which was excellent value considering 1 train trip & 1 gondola & 1 cog train all return trips was going to be 217.50. We had planned to stay overnight regardless.
In the end we paid 300 Swiss Franks for an apartment for 4 nights stay just 5 min walk from the station,
