We had to make the most of every minute today.
After lunch we headed off to a canyon that was opened to the public in 1888 - known as Aareschlucht.
We walked from the west entrance to the east & back.
The paths created along the southern side of the canyon took us along wooden walkways and through tunnels carved out of the surrounding rock. The water below us coming from the Aare river takes 11min to travel the 1400m length of the gorge. The water is a light milky aqua colour. The surounding cliff walls reach up 180m and the water depth can reach 5m.
At the start the 'Kleine Enge' is only 1m wide and the widest part, 'Grossen Runs' is 40m.
We took so many photos that it was crazy. The sound of the water running through was intense. For most of the walk the rock faces seemed to hover over the top of us. At wider parts of the canyon, trees were growing on the edges and at one point a small waterfall seemed to sprout out of nowhere.
It was physically awesome.
