We've been back in Perth for a few days to meet up with the people we are house sitting for over Christmas, and making the most of having electricity in the hostel! We've also sorted out some of our travelling for after Christmas, we've booked a trip to Tasmania and bought tickets to go to the 3rd round of the Australian Open. On Sunday we took a daytrip to Rottnest Island, which is an island about 20km off the coast of Perth. We had to get up very early to be picked up from the hostel, 5.30! Luckily it gets light here really early so it wasn't too bad. We got taken to the harbour and picked up the bikes we had hired, then took the 45 minute ferry across to the island. We ate breakfast in the main town, Thomson Bay, and had a coffee to wake ourselves up, then set off cycling round the island. We cycled for about 3 hours and did a 15km circuit all around the island, starting off going south along the coast to Parker Point. There were loads of lovely beaches and great views, and at one of our stops we saw a quokka! These are small animals that look like small, stumpy versions of wallabies. They are really friendly and look like they are always smiling, and the one we saw was really curious, coming right up to us and even licking my feet! We then carried on cycling along the south coast, and took a little detour to go up to the Wadjemup Lighthouse at the highest point of the island, there were great views but my legs were really starting to hurt once we got to the top! We then went downhill and carried on cycling around the coast, going north via Geordie Bay to get back to the main town. I was quite impressed with how far we cycled, especially with the amount of hills, but Joel said it was just like a regular day for him! Back in the town we had time to eat lunch before we went on a free guided walk to see quokkas - we walked along by the inland lakes and saw loads of mothers and their babies! They aren't really scared of humans so we were able to get pretty close to them. After the walk we relaxed in the town with an ice cream before heading down to the beach to relax. To end the day we walked around looking for more quokkas and were able to feed some leaves to a couple of them and even stroke them, they are really friendly! We had a really good day and it was nice to get off the mainland, although my legs will be paying for it in the morning!
