After spending 3 nights in Geraldton we left our campsite and drove 94 miles further up the coast to Kalbarri, a small town at the mouth of the Murchison River. On the way up we stopped off to see the Pink Lake near Port Gregory, which is a huge inland lake coloured pink because of bacteria living in the water, it looked like the water was reflecting something in the sky but the colour was actually coming from the water itself! Once we got to Kalbarri we checked into a campsite right opposite the beach, then did a bit of shopping. In the afternoon we had our first try of our new snorkelling equipment at Blue Holes, we saw quite a lot of fish and it wasn't too cold, but there was quite a strong current so we didn't stay that long unfortunately. The next morning we drove to the Principality of Hutt River Province, about an hour away from Kalbarri mainly offroad! When we got there we got there we got our passports stamped (finally!) by Prince Graeme, son of Prince Leonard who established the province. Prince Graeme then showed us around the chapel, and afterwards Prince Leonard showed us some of the gifts he has been given from other important people around the world. It was very nice, but a bit surreal to be in a different country! We then went back to Kalbarri and spent the afternoon exploring the cliffs south of the town. From Natural Bridge we spotted some whales, we then went to Island Rock, Eagle Gorge and Pot Alley, which had lovely views. We ended the afternoon with a 3km Rainbow Valley to Mushroom Rock hike along the cliffs, and finally saw our first kangaroo! We also saw parrots, osprey, lizards and a snake during the day, so we were pretty happy! For our last day in Kalbarri we started off by watching the pelican feeding on the foreshore, and then went into the national park to see the gorges. We started by doing a 1.4km walk (not really a hike) to see the Z Bend, which had really good views of the river and the gorges, and we also saw a big lizard. We then drove to the Loop and did a 1km hike to see Nature's Window, which is a rock formation that frames the views of the gorge just like a picture frame, the views were amazing! We were getting a little bit tired of driving off road though, it's very bumpy in a 2WD car! So we headed back into town and had a cheap lunch at the Kalbarri Motor Hotel Restaurant, and then spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing. We walked along the beach by the river, and paddled in the water which was really warm, and then headed back to the campsite where we had a Roo Snag for tea - Kangaroo Sausage! It tasted like beef, but it was a bit weird thinking that we were eating a kangaroo when we had only seen our first one the day before!
