We've spent the last few days in Geraldton, the largest town on Australia's mid-West coast. On Sunday we checked out of the campsite in Jurien Bay and drove 121 miles up the coast to Geraldton, stopping on the way at Greenough. We saw the leaning trees, which are growing horizontally due to the really strong winds along the coast, and then stopped for a drink at the Central Greenough Historic Settlement. Unfortunately when we went to leave, we realized that we'd managed to get a flat tyre, not great going seeing as we were only 3 days into our road trip! Luckily Joel could sort it out, so we carried on to Gerladton and found ourselves a good campsite right by the beach, it even had a pool! We wandered around the area by our campsite, walking along the beach, and saw the Point Moore lighthouse which sits on the headland, we even saw some Ospreys nesting by the beach. In the evening we had our first BBQ, we're really getting into Aussie living now! The next day we got our tyre fixed, and then went to buy some snorkelling equipment, not the cheapest we could have got but we can use it for scuba diving too and it's definitely coming home with us. We also bought some rash vests as sun protection, and the guy at the surf shop sold them to us for half price, bargain! For lunch we stopped at a little cafe that did really great toasties, and then we wandered along the foreshore by the beach in the main town. Later on we visited the HMAS Sydney II Memorial, which had great views over the town, and was really well set out as a memorial to a ship that sank during the Second World War. We also visited the St Francis Xavier Cathedral, which was painted in a funky stripy pattern, it looked really quite modern. Back on the foreshore we walked out to a lookout point which had great views over the bay, and then we skyped Mum and Dad from the beach, which had surprisingly good free wifi! For our last day in Geraldton we drove out to the Ellendale Pool, which was a really pretty fresh water pool surrounded by cliffs, unfortunately there were hundreds of flies buzzing around our heads, and we couldn't swim due to a risk of catching meningitis from the water! Instead of eating our picnic there we headed back to the foreshore at Geraldton, and then spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing by the pool at the campsite. We've also managed to sort out house sitting for somebody over Christmas and New Year, so we'll actually be in a house for our Christmas dinner which will be great! We're off to Kalbarri tomorrow, but may well stop off in Geraldton on our way South when we head back to Perth in a few weeks.
