Day 9 - (Day 5 on site)
All hands on deck for the "bag washing" of the blockwork structure, completion of the blockwork infills beneath the windows, installation of window panes (50% complete), erection and lashing down of the timber frame for the roof and corrugated metal sheeting. Under much better weather conditions the team thrived and were working on multiple work faces.
At approximately 11am part of the team departed for the monthly "food drop" accompanied by GGA volunteers. This provided us an excellent insight into the lives of the villagers in the valley away from the building site environment and GGA orphanage.
It also highlighted the importance of this vital food supply to the local folk. Many friendly people were met on this journey; in particular the children. An 11 month old Don King lookalike was spotted by eagle eyed Malc, to the amusement of all boxing fans - others did not get the knockout humour.
After finishing on site at 4pm we took on the GGA VII in a "friendly" football match; a heated engagement with quality and determination on display. Brookfield took an early 3-1 lead, and with a defensive formation nullified the attacking endeavour of the opposition. As our stamina waned we conceded two sloppy goals and were back to level scores.
Then in a freak incident our star player, James, twisted his ankle, whilst receiving a world class pin-point pass from a team mate. He went down in a heap with a rolled ankle, pining for his mother. Marina came to the rescue, as the team first aider, with the following question: "can you move your fingers?". A panicked look from James spoke volumes, and no response was necessary. Final whistle sounded and the match finished a 3-3 draw.
In the evening, part of the team attended another of the kids' choir practices featuring Zulu music blended with Beatles and other universal classics. Back to site early tomorrow; on the home stretch.
