Back in London via the Eurostar and checked into my apartment in Kensington. Dinner was a microwaved tandoori from Tesco round the corner.
Earlier today I visited some great locations south of Ypres including the cemetery at VC Corner at Fromelles, the Cobber memorial and the new cemetery at Pheasant Wood which has now accommodated the bodies discovered in the mass grave at Fromelles a couple of years ago.
Of greater importance for our family I visited Armentieres which is on the border between Belgium and France. My great uncle Sgt Walter Hannah 42nd Battallion was killed at Armentieres in Dec 1916 and is buried at Cite Bonjean Cemetery. See the album.
I also visited 23 Rue Sadi Carnot in Armentieres which has been indicated in Battallion records as the billets for the 42nd at that time.
The visit to the WW1 battlefields was a great few days, made more enjoyable by a generous tour operator, great weather and local community and an agreeable bunch of fellow Aussies.
