Today has been a leisurely day in Padstow. Lots of mature aged folk enjoying a day out and about and lots of eateries and drinkeries of course.
Lots of dogs on leads in the town and very little doggie doo to be seen. I have seen lots of chocolate labradors in this part of the world and quite a few Jack Russells....I'm not joking."
The first thing that hits you when you walk into the shopping area by the water is the smell of freshly baked pasties. A genuine pasty is something that the local bakers take pride in producing, and rightly so they are a good meal, not like the crappy imitations we get in Australia.
I also had a lovely local beer last night, 2 to be honest, brewed hereabouts, called Doom Bar.
The seagulls here are literally twice the size of Australian ones - bet you didn't know that.
There is a lobster breeding and release program based here too.
Very nice guest house here the Cross House Hotel in Cross St, of course. It apparently belonged to the last shipbuilder in the town and would be over a 100 years old. I have the front room looking down towards the town and wharf. The streets are alarmingly narrow with apparently nowhere to park, even temporarily. The landlord happily parked my car for me. 'You have to know where to look', apparently. I hope I can find it tomorrow.
People are surprisingly well mannered and sociable, saying hello, saying sorry at the least bit of inconvenience and waving with thanks when shown courtesy on the road. Mind you, a lot of courtesy on the roads is needed at times, given that they are so narrow.
The original Cornish accent is interesting. The locals tend to sound like Long John Silver. 'Ye oirl roight thar, are yeh?'. The accent is diluted over time with blow-ins and the general ease of travel these days.
I'm having trouble with access to the Internet here - the local wifi is not working properly I think.
Dinner tonight at the Old Customs House - grilled hake - very nice indeed, not like the 'hake' available down under. Dessert was yet another splendid drop called Tinners.
More sightseeing tomorrow, just how much will depend on the weather. It is drizzling a bit this evening. Lovely and peaceful down town by the water tonight with the misty drizzle.
Barnstaple tomorrow night.
