We are on the first leg of our ministry trip and our first stop has blown me away. We arrived at the Haven Home for children and were greeted by 102 beautiful children singing for us! I was so choked up I could hardly talk and had to stop myself sobbing with joy! I nearly lost it when the 2 youngest children- 4 and 5 presented us with fragrant garlands made from lillies, banana leaves and roses. Now I know how Will and Kate feel!
Our hosts have gone out of their way to welcome us and have given us a bedroom with air con and 3 packs of biscuits to tuck into. They even cook us special meals as they thought we would not like their spicy curries! I'd rather like their curries.
Some of the children are orphans but most come from mountain homes where they would not get an education. Their parents get to see them monthly and are expected to buy them shoes and toiletries. They live in dorms and share beds, an older child with a younger one to take care of, it's bare bones, not a toy or picture in sight but lots of laughter, boys playing football and a playground. The owners have planted a mango grove ( ready in June) and have teak trees so they can sell the wood.
The kids call me Mum, I'm so touched by their love, what a blessing to be here. I was woken at dawn this morning by the sound of someone's clanging metal pots and screeching outside the wall of the compound. It was relentless. All sorts of scenarios went through my mind including she was putting a Hindu spell on us or someone was seriously deranged but the truth was revealed-There is a cashew plantation just outside the walls, to prevent the birds getting the prized crop, a group of women spend the whole day crying out and making noise to scare the birds off!
We've just returned from the mountains where the air was fresh, it was mild and we saw monkeys! We distributed rice packs to the women and prayed for healing for who ever came forward. 2 hours later we were still at it (Jon and I) and we were desperately in need of some food and water but we saw dozens of healings including two men who had the strength and power return to their limbs after strokes and many backs, headaches and knees healed. The women there were collecting Tamarind pods from the tree to sell, we had a quick taste of the thick paste- yuk! It made me laugh because it's quite hard to get hold of in the UK and grows all over the place here! It was interesting to observe their ways, the babies and toddlers are naked from the waist down- no nappies so they wear a string around the waist with a flap of fabric covering their fronts! Some of the children had little more then rags on, gosh I wish I could clothe them all!
