We are getting used to mammoth treks across states here! This time we got on a train in old Delhi at 10 p.m (after first going to New Delhi station) where Justine and I were in a second class sleeper and Jon was in 3rd! The night was uneventful for us but I couldn't help worrying about poor Jon with the masses. Of course I needn't have worried because he was in his element surrounded by a whole family in his 6 bunk section where they all laughed, ate and talked until the lights went out at midnight, he also had a long meaningful conversation with a trekker lady from Ecuador so he well chirpy when we arrived at our destination at 5:00 a.m!
Our next hurdle was to find our taxi driver who we thought would make a bee line to us as we were the only white faces! After waiting in earnest for 1 hour we realised we were waiting at the side entrance and there was our driver asleep at the main door! With a quick stop to buy some fruit for breakfast we were on our way across the mountains for 7 hours. Our driver had driven all night from our destination so you can imagine we were a tad worried with him driving across potholes and around switchback curves for the duration of our trip. Apart from a quick cigarette he was amazing, I can't say the same for my bum which got seriously numb!
We are staying in a valley surrounded by mountains: Nepal to the east and Tibet to the north. Our friends here run an English language school. They have 3 beautiful girls who all speak fluent English, and the local dialect. They attend school here and love it! Our host has a Royal Enfield motorbike that Jon is desperate to have a ride on, it looks like a serious bike!
Our hosts get few visitors so it's been a real blessing for them for us to be here. We are going to interact with the language students tomorrow and have a picnic planned with their team today. It's hot during the day but blissfully cool at night and not a mosquito in sight!
I can't say I'm looking forward to the return trip back where we take a chair train and then a plane the next day back to Delhi and then off to Chennai! Our trip is nearly over, so sad!
