Waiting at Taiyuan station to board a train to Beijing. We left Pingyao at 8am by coach. That was a wonderful interesting city. It was like stepping back in time.
The journey back to Taiyuan took 2 hours and was split into two contrasting states - rural and city and what a contrast. Rural China looks very poor but there are fields as far as the eye can see full of corn. On the edges of the fields are the little businesses and dwellings. All look so run down, the pavements are very dusty and cars, if you can call them that, are battered and almost held together with sticky back plastic!
The city greets you with high rises flats and lots of construction. There are however plenty of trees and parks interspersed between the buildings. There are plenty of modern buildings but all at least 10 floors high. The highest ones have too many floors to count. The roads are in good condition and there are a lot of very decent, new looking cars. The roads are 6 lanes wide and traffic is nose to Two completely different worlds.
