Pisco sours making was epic. I was waiting in the lobby at 3pm as my itinerary said I would be picked up from the hotel. By 10 past 3 I gathered I wasn't being picked up and was just going to let it go, but got reception to give the company a call anyhow. They said the guide was waiting for me and that I should jump in a cab down to miraflores. Two of the guys... Daniel and David, from the hotel came and helped me get a cab. It was good to watch how it's done before having to do it myself as you have to negotiate the price before you get in. For a 20 minute cab ride it was 12 soles which is basically $4. I'm moving here! Found my guide and discovered I was the only person on the tour so didn't matter I was late! So my guide, Carlos, and I went to the markets to buy the ingredients for the sours. All it is really is limes, sours, sugar syrup, egg whites and bitters. Then we went to the rooftop terrace bar of a hotel which overlooked the ocean to make the cocktails. Let me forewarn anyone who is ever going to drink these... They are stronger than they taste! Me and Carlos got along like a house on fire and shared travel stories of Africa and Nepal and chatted about peru and its history... And through all the talking we finished a whole bottle of sours. We chilled out at the beach to sober up a bit but by the time I had to get home (8pm) I was still fairly... Merry... As dad put it (sorry for calling!!! Probably a little worrying for you!!). The thing is, I made it home. I don't exactly remember all the details of making it home, but I did. I admit that this story will not go down as my wisest moment...and should under no circumstances be repeated to nanna, but it has to have been one of the best holiday experiences I have ever had. It was just great to chat with a local about Peru etc. One thing I can safely say is that it will be quite a while before I can stomach pisco sours again!!
