A very humbling day.
We visited Robben Island today - the place where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated.
We drove into Cape Town to the V&A Waterfront - absolutely brilliant. Shops restaurants and bars as far the eye could see - breakfast in the harbour with, amongst other delights, a blackberry smoothie that you had to drink with a spoon!
Then onto Robben Island. The tour, once you reach the island, is done by bus and our tour guide - in common with all the other guides - was an ex prisoner. Fascinating, funny, moving, knowledgeable? He was all of these things and more - and the most amazing part was the realisation that most of the modern era activism against apartheid took place within my lifetime.
Our guide around the prison block was a prisoner who had spent 7 years on the island. During his sentence he had been subject to unspeakable torture over a six month period in The Detention Block - a place, he told us, that many did not survive.
Nelson Mandela's cell was obviously pointed out - as was his garden and his prison number was explained - 46664. He was prisoner number 466 imprisoned in 1964, and was sentenced to Life - and that meant life.
We met a fellow visitor from Botswana who was visibly moved by the whole thing - us too.
Then we returned to the city and somehow found ourselves in a brewery - now how did that happen? and we served by Miss Misery and her guts - good grief girl smile!
...oh and then we got caught in Cape Town rush hour - doh!
