We flew from Melbourne in the afternoon still recovering from the previous night and arrived in Sydney to check into our swanky 5 star youth hostel, fully equipped with pool and sauna - cool! On our first full day (Sunday) we decided to take it easy and headed off for the beach at Bondi. It was a bank holiday weekend so half of Sydney had the same idea and there were thousands of people on the beach. Bondi beach is a pretty cool place, the beach is huge and there are nice restaurants and bars. We spent another day here and walked around the headland which was lovely, the views were beautiful. On Monday morning we had a short walk into the city and then went on our 3 hour bridge climb. This was amazing and we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience once Ems had got over the fear of being able to see the river underneath her through the walkway! We had amazing views of the city from the bridge and it was well worth the climb, it was also interesting to hear about the building of the bridge and how the people who built it were up there not even strapped on, very scary! Surprisingly, only 16 people died during the building of the bridge and only 1 of these was from falling off. Thank you to Dave and Sarah who bought us the bridge climb for Christmas, great pressie guys!! From Sydney we also went to the Blue Mountains which are amazing and are only about a 45 minute drive from Sydney. It is an amazing area and took British explorers 23 years to find a way through due to the thickness of the rainforests and the nature of the land. We went on a couple of walks and saw some amazing wildlife - a yellow tailed black headed cockatoo and some eastern grey kangaroos. We visited some of the more popular sights later on in the afternoon which included the 3 sisters and we took a ride on the steepest railway in the world after clambering down 1000 steps for the priveledge. The railway was actually quite scary, we weren't expecting it to be quite as steep as it was. The Blue Mountains was another one of those places where we would have liked to have stayed longer. Following on from visiting Ramsey Street in Melbourne, we thought it only right to visit Palm Beach near Sydney, which is where they film Home and Away! The beach was beautiful and it was a very affluent area, the houses were huge! We went to the surf club and took all the tourist photos and walked along the beach where they do the filming. No filming when we were there but it was funny to see the surf club and you can tell exactly which part of the beach they use in the program! Also in Sydney we went to the top of the Sky Tower, we went up when it was dark and the views over the city were great. We walked around Darling Harbour and Circular Quay, Circular Quay being where the Opera House is and around a place called the Rocks which has cafes and restaurants and shops, its a lovely area. March 18th-my 25th birthday! Very strange being away from home, didn't feel much like a birthday. Thank you to those who sent a message or a card, it was nice to get messages from home. On the Saturday night Phil took me out and spashed out a bit! We went for a meal at Darling Harbour and then went for a few drinks at the Opera Bar, not a bad way to celebrate a birthday really! On the actual day of my birthday it was also the 75th birthday of the Sydney Harbour Bridge so there were celebrations going on in different locations around the city which was good. We spent the day walking around Darling Harbour, we then went by boat to the Opera House and walked around the Botanical Gardens. On the day the Harbour Bridge was completely closed down to traffic and you could register to walk across it, so we did that on the night. It was brilliant, we were all given free caps with little lights on them and when it got dark all you could see was thousands of these little lights walking across the bridge, it was really impressive. The bridge itself was lit up in all different colours and looked really cool. Sydney is a great city and looks just how it does on the TV! We both really enjoyed Sydney and would recommend it to anyone coming to Australia...
