Our first trip to Sydney, it didn't all go to plan!! We arrived with a booking for the Glasgow Arms hotel for 2 double rooms as we were travelling with Melody and Lyndon. However, when we got there they had messed up our booking and only booked out 1 room. Surprisingly enough, all rooms were booked out because it was New Year! The first night they had a spare room so we managed to get a room each for that night and they said they would sort something out for us the next day. What they thought as a reasonable solution to this problem was actually squeezing 4 beds into an already small twin room and having us all sleep in the one room, it was so cramped that some of the bags were actually in the bathroom!! Anyway, we said this wasn't acceptable and ended up getting our money back from them (after lengthy arguments on the phone) and went to stay with one of Lyndon's friends, Kerry, who kindly let us stay with her. So we were sleeping on the floor but it was loads better than the room we were given at the hotel! What a drama!
Anyway, we did get to enjoy a bit of Sydney while we were there, it was pretty cool seeing the Harbour and Opera House for the first time, Sydney seems like a really nice city. We caught the ferry over to Manly and went to the beach which was good, Manly is a really nice place with some good shopping!! The ferry ride over was good too, you get some great views of Sydney from the water. We have to mention as well, the bridge is exactly the same as the Tyne Bridge, it's quite funny! Only it's a bit bigger and has nicer scenary around it (sorry Vix!) and better weather!! We also went to Bondi Beach which was really cool, the beach is amazing but the water was freezing! We went in for a swim but we didn't last too long, we thought we were going to freeze! We are hoping to go back to Bondi, we really liked it.
One night we went to the Opera Bar which runs along the harbour edge under the Opera House. It's a really cool bar, you can stand outside and admire the views while having a nice cold drink. It was quite strange because there were a few brides in there! They must have been married that day and just went for drinks after, funny seeing women walking around in wedding dresses!
New Years Eve we ventured down to the Harbour to watch the fireworks, I have never seen so many people in all my life!!! It was jam packed, people everywhere. It was impossible to get a drink, you couldn't get anywhere near the bars and there was a van outside selling cans that you could only be bothered to wait for once!! We found a spot anyway and waited for the countdown. Considering the amount of people and how late we got there we actually got quite a good spot, we could pretty much see all of the bridge so could see all the fireworks going off there and the others all around the harbour once they reached the sky. The fireworks were brilliant and they lasted a good while too, we were impressed, not a bad way to see in the New Year.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!! HERES TO A VERY HAPPY AND HEALTHY 2007...
