We were picked up from Sydney for our week on Surfari where we would make our way up to Byron Bay. Most of the first day was spent driving but when we arrived at our first camp location we realised the driving was worth it. Our first stop was called Point Plomer in Crescent Head, New South Wales. Our spot was just perfect, it took approximatley 30 seconds to walk from our tent to the beach, doesn't get any better than that!! After setting up camp we got to have our first surf session, it was great. We were surfing on a point break and the waves were great, small and slow which was perfect for us beginners! I'm not going to lie, we were shattered after this first session, our muscles were in major, major shock! Mine a bit worse than Phil's I have to admit! Nothing that a cold shower and a decent meal around the campfire wouldn't sort though!
We spent the next couple of days surfing here, sometimes on the point and sometimes on the beach break. We were given some surf lessons from our guides and lessons on the actual ocean, like the different surf breaks and rip tides and how the weather effects the surf etc. It was really informative, we felt we learnt a lot from it. We also did some yoga. One of the girls on our trip was a yoga teacher and so we did some in the morning on the beach before we surfed, it was great, I would highly recommend it to anyone. Obviously the beach was the perfect setting for it but I'm definately sold on it and will be taking it up when I get home.
After a couple of days at Point Plomer we moved onto a place called Minnie Waters in the Yuraygir National Park, which was equally as beautiful as the place we had just left. The beach that we camped right next to didn't have very good conditions for us so we all piled in the bus and went in search of some better waves. We were taken to one of the most remote beaches I've ever seen. From where we parked the bus we had to carry our boards for about a 10 minute walk down to the beach, it was just stunning. The first day we surfed here the waves were pretty big and it scared some of us a bit! Our guides had a great time though, they were in surfing for hours! We all spent the majority of the time either nose diving or sitting on the beach watching the sky rockets!! The next day we found another beach in the same vacinity and surfed there instead, the waves were a bit smaller and better for us. This was the best surfing day we had, we caught loads of waves and stood up loads. My paddling had improved as well, I must have built up a bit more strength just in a week because on the first day, I would paddle but not actually move!
This week was one of the best weeks ever, we both really enjoyed it and are already thinking about when we can do it again. The places we were taken to were just mind blowing and to be in the water surfing there was just unreal. We were lucky to have a really good group of people as well which made it fun, the guides were great and the food was fantastic. We were also lucky enough to see dolphins one day and Goanna's in our camp (see pictures!) as well which was just the icing on the cake really!
You will notice in the photo album that there aren't any pictures of us actually surfing, well that is because we were both too busy doing just that-surfing and so we didn't manage to get any pictures of each other and we can't show you how talented we are now, never mind!!!!
Our trip ended in Byron Bay where we spent 3 nights. On the Saturday night we were treated to a meal and some drinks and we all got together to watch the DVD that had been made of the week which turned out to be really funny. Byron Bay was a lovely place,we would have liked to have stayed longer but didn't have time, we're already planning our return! We only had 2 days there and on our second day it poured down with rain literally all day so we didn't get to do much.
From Byron Bay we travelled up to Surfers Paradise, we only stayed here one night to see what it was like and we were quite pleased about that! Our hostel was dreadful and we weren't really keen on the place much, the beach is nice but then you look the other way and all you see is high rise buildings. We had heard that it was like this but wanted to see for ourselves and now we have! Bye bye surfers...!!
