Rainbow Beach was a lovely little place, the town consisted of about 5 shops and thats it! The beach itself was beautiful and went for miles, great to just walk along. We took the time in Rainbow Beach to just chill out and hang out at the beach which was nice. It was also our base for our trip to Fraser Island.
Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, it takes about 7 minutes to get across to it on the ferry, it is very close to the mainland. The island is mainly rainforest with beach running all the way around the outside. There are no actual roads on the island, the beach is the main highway (normal road rules appy) and the roads going through the rainforest are basically very bumpy sand tracks. If you don't have a 4 wheel drive then don't even think about going. The main beach highway was great to drive up, the scenary was stunning and it was great fun blasting up the beach. Its a shame that you can't swim in the sea because there are sharks quite near the beach and a lot of bluebottles. Bluebottles are little blue jelly fish that have this tail about a metre long coming from them that they use to sting you, or wrap around one of your limbs and temporarily paralise it, they are nasty little things, check out the picture in the album if you want to see one. There are hundreds of the things all along the beach that have been washed up and dried out and when the cars drive over them they pop really loudly! Quite barbaric really!
On our first day on the island we went to Lake Mackenzie which is a huge freshwater lake, it was a really pretty place. When we were there a Dingo tried to jump into our bus, we missed all this action though as we were laid on the beach by the lake! The dingos on Fraser Island are apparently the purest breed of dingos left in Australia, this is because no dogs are allowed on the island and so the dingos only breed with each other keeping the bloodline pure. We did actually get to see our first wild dingo later on in the day when we were parked outside one of the shops, we were lucky enough to see another one when we were doing a walk as well. They are really unhealthy looking things but apparently they are healthy, they are just naturally very thin. You have to be careful with them as well, they can attack you and there have been stories of them killing babies before. Just like anything else in Australia really, they can harm you bad!!! As we keep getting told, if it doesn't sting you it will bite you and that is very true of this place, its terrifying!! On our second day we went to Indian Heads which is a point of land that sticks out, we walked up to the top and got great views of the island. We also got the chance to see the Mahino shipwreck which is actually on the beach itself, its really cool. Oh, and we saw our first Kookaburra, or 3 actually! They are so funny, we were having lunch and one tried to steal someones sandwich, it had a whole bun in its mouth before anyone realised! One was sat right next to Phil and was trying to stare him out so he took a photo of it, its so funny, we've put it on here for you to see!
