11 weeks in Berlin (tomorrow!), but there's one part of my life that has gone largely unmentioned on here: my love life.
As my blog site makes my site into a book I can keep forever after I finish it, I want everything important to be here. And the last 9 weeks were important to me. I didn't want to talk about it at the time, but now is the time where I guess I'm allowed to.
Nine days into my time in Berlin, me and Nadi (my housemate for those who haven't been keeping up) went to the local gay bar, SilverFuture. As usual I had my eyes open for any talent I could spot, and in an unusually lucky night, there were 3 attractive guys I had noticed. But after a few drinks in there, we jumped on a train to the north of Berlin, where we were going to the gay English-speakers meet-up, "Queer Beer Thursday". However, due to work on the tracks, there is a "pendelvekehr" (shuttle train?) between Kottbusser Tor and Heinrich-Heine Strasse, so basically you get off at Kotti (that's what the cool kids call it) and get on a train that takes you 2 stations, then you change again. When we got off the first train, I noticed one of the cute guys from SilverFuture standing on the platform. I pointed this out to Nadi, and being the amazing wing woman that she is, she sprang into action. Although there were several people between us and cute guy, she made out like we were really confused, pointed to cute guy and beckoned him over to help us out, speaking in English to make it seem like we were poor little tourists. He explained what we already knew about the trains, and then with contact initiated, Nadi got to work on stage 2. "So, where are you going tonight? I bet you're going to the same place as us, aren't ya?" and though he was going home as he had to have his wisdom teeth removed in the morning, he came with us, as we decided alcohol would surely help with that! On the train she also asked all the "are you gay?" "are you single?" questions, which all got the right answers. We started on the vodka shots when we got to the club. And then we discovered that his dentist was very close to our house. So it made sense for him to come home with us really, we decided, and we'd make him soup after he'd been to the dentist. And once he had used the immortal "So, who's your favourite No Angel?" line on me, there was no going back!
That's how things started, and they continued on with Hello Saferide, Bat For Lashes and Miss Li concerts, lots of Fast Food, sushi, chocolate shops, sporks, that scene from Max on Hollyoak's funeral, Nancy Ann Cianci, lots of coffee (like a real grown up!), clothes shopping, drunken phonecalls, too many No Angels references (including a dinosaur named Lucy), sporks, pretzels, a stolen twix, The Last Unicorn (a weird German film obsession), Gooseberry and cinnamon yoghurts, and even the odd touristy-thing!
And although that's where the story ends, it was a nice (and new) experience for me to spend so much time with a guy, and do things like walk down the street holding hands. At times it really added to the magical feel that there is living in a place like Berlin. Sure it wasn't perfect - he liked Morrissey FFS! - but it was nice while it lasted, and I wanted to share.
