Dinner with Monsieur Bonwell.
Wednesday ( May Day) was a tough day, it rained all day and I mean rained. Thunder, lightening you name it. Good to see the weather treats French national holidays the same as it does UK. The only time it stopped was five minutes after I arrived at my very nice Chateau.
I was the only guest but later on a well dressed gentleman appeared. He was from Paris and spoke English well so we got talking. Monsieur Bonwell was an intriguing character, he claimed to specialise in retail ( ladies lingerie) and I.T. For a world renowned property consultancy. This combination seems highly unlikely and what with his suave style and excellent language skills I assumed for a while he maybe a retired member of the French Intelligence Service.
However as we spoke over dinner I came to the conclusion he was most likely a farmer. Constant references to land rovers and the fact that he looked like a man used to receiving large cheques from the EU (CAP) reinforced my hunch. Anyway it was a very pleasant dinner.
Next morning Monsieur Bonwell offered to cycle some way with me. His bike was rather unsuitable ( see photos) but once we had removed the wicker basked from the handlebar it looked a little less conspicuous. I did notice the remains of several courgettes in the basket though, confirming my farming hunch.
We had a very pleasant ride for about 50k then suddenly an urgent call was received. It appeared Monsieur (farmer) Bonwell was required in Paris to speak on the future of I.T. Networks and their impact on lingerie sales. Clearly highly unlikely and I suspect he just needed to get to the tractor dealer before closing time.
His company will be missed but I guess those courgettes don't grow themselves.
