Day 17 and rest in Chalon sur Saone which is a pleasant town and it's sunny.
After Farmer Bonwell's departure the weather declined rapidly. As I finally left the Loire to join the Central Canal I also moved into an area of France that is in post industrial renovation phase, to put it kindly. Lots of old mills and factories. The whole landscape was saturated after the very wet winter, flooding everywhere. At some points the canal path was surrounded by water and in one or two actually under water to about 6 inches. A wet and forgettable day made worse by a mediocre and unfriendly hotel in Monceau les mines. Not a town to revisit.
On Friday I pushed on through the industrial area and suddenly emerged into the beautiful Burgundy countryside. The sun came out and all was good. Chalon further improved my mood, a very nice town where the canal meets the Saone. The shops even open on Sunday.
To top off a good day Brighton won and consolidated their playoff place.
