So I haven't even been in London for one full week and I'm already having such a good time! Since I already told you about some of the more general things going on, I guess I'll just tell you a little bit about my last few days.
Tuesday July 6th
This was the second day of lecture (10am-1pm) and my first day with my discussion group class (4pm-5pm). In between lecture and class I went to Pret A Manger which is like a healthy, pretty cheap and fast place for lunch with some friends in my class. After that I did some of my reading and then went to class which was very interesting. My teacher for discussion group is Australian and I absolutely love his accent! After that a bunch of us went to a small café and got some pizza and then went to a bar near Leicester Square to watch the rest of the Holland World Cup game. It was awesome to be in a bar with tons of people who really cared about the game and it made all of us even more into it. After that Nicole, Michelle and I ended up walking around trying to figure out what to do and basically just walked in the direction where we saw people. Somehow we ended up in the Chinatown area, which is also where the only Dutch bar in London is located (which we thought was pretty funny). There were people all over the streets celebrating so we decided to jump in too. We bought a beer at the corner convenience store and started singing in Dutch which was very comical. Then we walked a little bit further and ended up in front of O'Neill's where we met Craig who was the first British person I had met!! He got us even more excited about being in London and actually bought us a beer. Then for some reason we decided to walk over to the area we were before and we met these hilarious Australians. I'm not sure if they were funny because they are Aussies, because they were drinking or because they are just funny people but they were very entertaining and tons of fun! When it started getting late we decided to walk back to our dorm because we had class early the next day.
Wednesday July 7th
I had to get up early (6am) in order to finish all my reading for lecture. I went to breakfast (which is free at my dorm and pretty good for a free breakfast) and then went to lecture which was really interesting and a lot less nit-picky like Tuesday's class. My professor is so knowledgeable and I think the material we are covering is interesting. Then a few of us stood in line to get tickets to a Riverboat Cruise through LSE Summer School for next Friday. After that I went to Sainsbury's (the grocery store right down the street from my dorm) and got food for lunch and stuff to make dinner for the night. I came back to my flat to make lunch (spring rolls) but I couldn't figure out how to work the oven (I didn't know there was an on/off switch on the wall) so I ended up microwaving/sticking them in the toaster which almost caught on fire. Despite all that, they were pretty tasty. Then I worked on homework until class which was good but kinda frustrating because my (Australian) teacher has a different approach to the questions and I'm not always sure what he wants us to do. After class I talked to some of my flatmates and we (me and Michelle, one of my flatmates that goes to BU) made dinner. I made whole wheat penne pasta with sautéed veggies and red sauce. Michelle got a bottle of wine and we pigged-out (Nicole also came over before we went out).We then went to George The Fourth which is an on-campus pub to watch the Germany-Spain game and I was kinda sad because I wanted Germany to win (no particular reason). Then we just wondered around again and actually ended up going to Tesco's and getting these monstrous bottles of Smirnoff ice and walking around London with them (I love that it's not a big deal). We ended up at the zoo bar and it seemed like a lot of fun (we got in for free) but there were some creepy guys (because they were like 40) talking to us so we decided to head home. Saw some NU kids on the street and ended up hanging out with them for another hour. When I got back to my room I Skyped with Kristin G and then fell asleep!
Thursday July 8th
I woke up early again on Thursday to try and get some of my reading done. Went to lecture and class as usual and then came back and pretty much did homework all night. Since I had gone out the previous two nights I decided to lay low and try and get as much done as possible. I took a little break and went to Itsu with Michelle and Nicole for dinner and got this really delicious chicken soup that I actually had leftovers for lunch on Friday. Then I continued to do homework until I fell asleep kinda early because I woke up early. Overall, it was a pretty boring but productive day.
Friday July 9th
I actually decided to wake up at normal time (8am) and got breakfast, lecture, lunch then class like normal. I was sooo excited for it to be Friday and to finally have time to see things in London (although I do have a paper due Monday that I should probably be doing right now). After class, Cynthia (who's in my class and also lives in my flat) and I walked to Covent Garden and watched some street performers. We ended up watching these two really funny British men who were doing some crazy tricks and were hilarious with their sayings/phrases. After that I went on a little trip to find an ATM which I knew was close but I just kinda wandered around until I found it ( I did ask for directions once). You may have noticed that a huge theme in my London adventures included wandering, but so far it's been very successful. Then I met up with 13 other people back at my dorm and we all went and had Indian food (it was my first time too!) It was soo delicious and nice for almost everyone to be together. After that we decided for us all to go to Fabric which is a club in London. We didn't really know where we were going but after asking 4 people for directions and multiple maps we got there. It was 10 pounds to get in which was pretty expensive but totally worth it! There were like 3 or 4 rooms with different DJ's and tons of people. We met some more British people and danced the night away. The music was very interesting and kind of hard to describe but I definitely had no clue how to dance to it and I'm pretty sure if I saw myself dancing on video I would be so embarrassed. We finally left there at 5:30 am which was just completely ridiculous! I had made the mistake of wearing heels to the club which soon came off when we were dancing and walking back to our dorm. We decided to make pasta when we got back to our room then took a 2 hour nap which I guess you could consider my night's sleep.
Saturday July 10th
I woke up at 9:15am and got a much needed shower/got ready for sightseeing! We met downstairs and walked to Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guards which was pretty awesome! Then we walked around London seeing: a huge park, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Parliament, the London Eye, The Thames River, Trafalgar Square, National Gallery and this huge Dance event. We didn't tour any of these places but mostly just walked around and got familiarized with the city. We went into the National Gallery for a bit but were too tired to stick around. Then we walked back and I got to talk to my family on Skype! I took a nap and then we got ready and went to dinner at Hache in Camden Town (thanks to Jenny's recommendation). The restaurant we went to was sooo yummy and was the perfect meal for a busy day. We got back around 9pm and since then I've been getting some things together and writing this long entry haha.
Yeah I didn't realize how long this would be but you know me and my love of details! Hopefully I won't procrastinate for the next blog and so I won't have soo much to tell! Tomorrow were going to take a Double Decker bus tour and then go to a pub for the World Cup so I should really get my act together and work on my paper that is due Monday. Oh also, they took care of my bed so there's no more bugs!!!!!!!!
