Still in Tangle River we had breakfast this morning as we watched the clouds lift to reveal the reflection of the surrounding mountains on the rippling lake. Fishermen could be seen readying themselves at the water's edge for their day's activity. Graeme was given responsibility of the driving for the day with two basic instructions from the navigator - drive 20 miles turn right then drive 188 miles turn left. He accomplished this with some extra pull offs into some places of extraordinary scenery. The Richardson Highway is Alaska's oldest highway following the Gulkana River. The drive takes us through the spectacular and narrow Keystone Canyon and across the Thompson Pass to Worthington Glacier which was absolutely amazing. Shades of turquoise and blues could be seen on the massive ice mass seemingly hanging off the side of the mountain. Many waterfalls (Bridal Veil Falls and Horsetail Falls) cascaded down steep roadside walls finishing in the creeks and rivers which continuously crossed and bordered the roads. We stopped at Copper Creek Inn - a historic roadhouse 4 mile off the Richardson Highway. Copper Creek is one of Alaska's oldest communities in the Interior. We drove into Valdez to the odour of fish and diesel. Everywhere there were RV Parks.- large expanses of grey metal on which the RV's park side by side. Staying tonight at Best Western Harborview Inn (very nicely appointed accommodation). Unbelievably there were rabbits everywhere you looked. Black ones, grey ones, white ones, brown ones - they were just hanging around nibbling at any bit of grass they could find. Apparently they were brought in as pets but having "bred like rabbits" they have become domestically wild. Dinner was enjoyed at the on site restaurant overlooking the harbor.
